how can i find out if a radio is part 95 compliant?

http://transition.fcc.gov/oet/ea/fccid/  That is the link for the FCC approval.   You put in the FCC ID number and then look at the certification.  It will tell you what sections a radio is approved for.

no sure how the search works, i don't have the radio in hand but its a Kenwood TK-3160

Yes, I also tried and it seems as if you need the FCC ID for that link, I am going to go and look, As I recall PastorGary, Spd640 and a few other members were compiling a list of part95 radios. I am sure I saw a list of a whole bunch of radios at some point. I was also told part95A is a GMRS only subcategory, so those radios do not include FRS, but offer the benifit of removable antennas.

the TK-3160 is not on the local myGMRS list. check under the battery cover for the FCC ID number. I am going to do the same with my CCR now.

I can not figure out how to enter my FCC-ID at that link either. it says to enter the first 3 to 5 digits the one line and the remainder in a separate field. anybody know how this works?

How it works is you take the FCC ID number, such as as Motorola Radaius CP125 HT, the number is ABZ99FT4065.  The first three letter, or numbers, in this case letters are ABZ.  You enter that, that is the manufacturer code.  Then you enter the remaining information 99FT4065 in the product code box and press enter.   When it comes up you will see a caption marked "Display Grant"  this will bring up a copy of the actual grant, it will look like the link below.

We can now see that this radio is only Part 95 type accepted as submitted by Motorola.  If I use the FCC ID number for my Ritron SLX-400 HT is looks like this:

The debate over using PART 90 equipment for PART 95 use, I'll assume that debate will still be around long after I'm gone. My opinion on using Part 90 equipment shouldn't really matter if the equipment was manufacture prior to the January 2013 NARROW BANDING mandates, because those maybe be used on Amateur Radio Bands, but no real reason that they could be used for GMRS.

Wow.  I'm all for using the search feature and using existing info, but I am pretty sure reviving an 8 year old thread is a record for this forum.  LOL

 

I am pretty sure, those in the know actually prefer the legacy LMR stuff for the rock-solid performance and true full legal limit power.  It's not for the faint of heart or technically challenged, though.

No kidding. When I starting collecting my mostly Kenwood LMR gear, and got the programming software for them, my first impression was WTF is all this crap in the setup. The setup is even stranger for the digital stuff. It's a bit of a mind set change to get use to how commercial radio radios are setup verses ham gear. Ham gear you can program them on the fly. The commercial radios you program them once and then just turn on the radio and hit the PTT button.

i'll second this as well..having jumped into LMR gear with some Vertex EVXs...the most basic frequency setup wasn't too bad, but SO many menus. i'll say their context based help is pretty good at explaining things though.  went to a VX mobile next, which was a bit simpler, and i learned some things there i was able to go back and apply to the EVXs.

still here and there poking at getting one of the other EVXs (i have two 450-512 split, and one 400-470) working on DMR.
