William - Any mobile radio or portable radio that is used with a GMRS repeater system has to transmit on the 467 frequency and receive on the 462 frequency with exactly a 5 mhz offset.  There is probably a CTCSS or DPL tone that has to be added to the programming for at least the mobile or portable radio transmit frequency to match what the repeater needs to operate.

 

I'm personally not familiar with the Part 90  Baofeng uv-5ra radio that you mentioned, so perhaps others who have used that type can assist better than I can.

 

Just a question while we are waiting for some additional help:  Do you have the programming software and the programming cable?

he also has info on how a repeater works which, will give you a better idea of what needs to be programmed into your radio. he has directions in the form of PDF files for manual programming.

In case you haven't gotten it sorted out yet, and are attempting to program a channel using just the radio's keypad, you have to program the receive settings, then program the transmit settings to the same channel location. Programming the uv-5r series of radios directly from the radio itself it does not make use of the offset settings.

 

Kinda silly, but that's how they work.

 

MUCH easier if you spend the ~$6 on Amazon, and get a programming cable. I'd also recommend downloading CHIRP rather than using the included programming software.

If you're still working on this, here is a very helpful video on repeater work specifically using a Baofeng UV-5R. (I use a UV-5RA, and the menu functions are still the same.)  Link is on the bottom.

 

The video will demonstrate everything, but basically there are two ways of doing this.

 

In Frequency mode, you can enter the desired RX frequency (467.700) then press the following:

 

"Menu 26" and then "Menu" again  (This is the Off-Set Frequency Setting)

Enter the desired "Off-Set" amount (005.000) and then press "Menu" to confirm.

 

Now you press the down arrow on your key pad (Which is the Menu 25 position)

Press "Menu" again to confirm your SFT - D (Shift Direction)

Press arrow up or down to scroll your selection (In your case it's a - )

Press "Menu" to confirm

 

And there you have it, RX of 467.700 and a TX of 462.700

 

If you want a hard save in Channel Mode, I would follow the advice of the others above and use the CHIRP software and NOT the UV5R VIP. CHIRP will allow you to set the RX frequencies, set your off-set and direction in one sitting.

This programming turns out to be quite easy without using the cable.. This video tutorial is the best I have found.. He has a couple. And yes, you do have to save transmit and receive to the same preset for it to work.... I can set up at prest now in about two minutes with the info in front of me...

Anything Ubuntu based that doesn't have it pre-installed simply open up a terminal.

 

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-hams-updates/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install chirp

 

Also, add user to dialout

 

sudo usermod -G dialout (your username)
