New to GMRS

Received my GMRS license last week and learning about programming repeaters. I have been to RepeaterBook.com and this website looking for local repeaters. I feel like lots are outdated? 
 

i live in South Reno and hit a repeater in Incline Village, Nevada (26 miles away) with a BF with a big whip antenna. Recently purchased a BTECH GMRS-PRO and it’s awesome. Just learning about it. 
 

i had a question regarding when I do transmit over a repeater and I say my call sign initially, the repeater hit me with the Morse code which is good. But I transmit after and I get the repeater telling me it’s name again with the Morse code. Am I doing something wrong? It does this every time I try to transmit. Thanks

Many repeaters are outdated as there is no requirement to update or maintain stuff. In addition there are repeaters that are listed that have never been put on the air.

Depending on how the repeater is programmed it can or cannot do what your seeing. Personally all my LMR repeaters ID every 15 minutes or 30 for hobby stuff. No need to ID after every transmission but I've seen that in the ham world on some stuff. I would not say your doing anything wrong its the way the owner set it up.

The repeaters on mygmrs.com will disappear from the map if they haven't been updated in a years time. You can still find them by selecting the gear in the left hand corner and select stale repeaters. So that keeps most of the stuff you see here up to date. I can't speak to how they keep things updated at Repeaterbook.com but why do you feel they are outdated on this site?

In my experience, Repeaterbook is good for ham repeaters, but not the best source of GMRS repeater information. That honor goes to MyGMRS.com. I say that because when I look at Repeaterbook and list by California GMRS repeaters, I see 35 repeaters. When I look at MyGMRS and filter by California, I see 144 repeaters. 265 if I include stale repeaters. While I'm no expert, I would think that indicates that MyGMRS is the more comprehensive source. And I've had to make a number of corrections to Repeaterbook entries, both mine and others. They rely on users to some degree to report or edit outdated or wrong information. That would indicate to me that of the thousands of repeaters on Repeaterbook, there are other inaccuracies or outdated information that have yet to be fixed.

I’m not raging on this site or RepeaterBook. I just noticed I was able to hit more repeaters on RepeaterBook than the this site. This site is excellent though. Really enjoying the community here. I would think there would be more repeaters in my area? Maybe some folks just don’t want to list em?

After reviewing… I totally agree. This site is pretty excellent

I’m not sure if you are aware of this but on the main map page if you go to Edit User Profile you can select Weekly Repeater Digest and you’ll get an email every Monday on any changes to repeaters in your state. I just thought of this as I received mine this morning.
