Antenna Springs

WRUW275

Question

I have a couple antenna's on the roof of the truck, both Tram antenna's.  One is a dual band 70/2m (BR-179) the other is for a scanner but both are very similar in design. They are on NMO mounts in the roof and I was thinking of adding springs as they hit low hanging branches and such and I am concerned about pulling the mount out of the roof metal.  From what I can find the dual band will need to be re-tuned, has anyone had any luck adding springs?   Since in NMO mounts maybe just go with a different style antenna?

Any suggestions welcomed

There are ‘no ground plane (required)’ antennas which come with a spring base and are already tuned for GMRS use.

What is you goal ? Do you need a dual band ?

There are multiple antennas with springs for GMRS. Laird is the better ones. If mono band is what you want the Laird B4503 is a decent antenna. I run these on multiple SAR vehicles.

Good place to view them is here

I run Larsen (NMO2/70SH and NMO150/450/758) both because they perform well and the spring. My truck roof is 6'7", and I regularly go in parking garages that are 7'2" without a place to stop and remove the antenna. I wouldn't waste your time retuning your existing antenna with a spring (spring is about $25), just get one with the spring already.

The NMO2/70SH is centered on the ham bands, but is not bad on GMRS. The NMO150/450/758 is centered on the commercial frequencies, is better for GMRS, worse for ham but still acceptable.
