I picked up some Baofeng UV-5r's for hunting and fishing with my son and quickly learned about the GMRS world and recently got my license. My dad actually had his ham license for decades starting in the 80's when he was using a radio with a certain band to fly RC planes. I feel like I have learned a ton working with the Baofeng's including programming a local repeater. I put in the frequency, DPL tones, 005.000 offset and a + direction. I put the DPL tones (they are the same) into T-DCS and R-DCS. When I que the mic I get the static and the courtesy tone indicating I am hitting the repeater. I have heard some traffic on this repeater (not a ton) but I haven't had a successful radio check yet. My buddy programmed his Baofeng into the repeater, got the courtesy tone but when we went about 100 yards apart all we got was the static and courtesy tone. We tried radio checking each other and never could transmit/get out. Is being to close together a factor? Is there anything else I am missing in the radio programming? Should I only put in the transmit DPL tone and get rid of the receive? Am I correct that all GMRS repeaters have a +005.000 offset? I am using a UV-5r with a 15 inch Nagoya 771 as well as the Nagoya mobile UT-72g, I drove to within a half mile of the repeater. Any and all help is appreciated. WSAM454 Posted February 26 Report Share Posted February 26 You may be able to "key up" the repeater, which means you will hear its squelch tail, but your signal may be too weak to actually "hold" the repeater and allow for meaningful communication. Are there any other repeaters you can try? If not, at least try using the radios on a simplex frequency and see if you can communicate with each other. wilhelm Posted February 26 Report Share Posted February 26 On another thread I was reading," I can't seem to get two radios to communicate over the same repeater" the poster also couldn't get his two radios to communicate.
