Need More Resonant Handi-Talkie Antennas

Question

Posted

A newbie to GMRS radios, are better more efficient antennas available for handie-talkies? Some people have mentioned just buy MFJ or Comet 2 meter/70 cm Handi-Talkie antennas ("rubber duckies") but these are not really resonant for GMRS frequencies.  I use a 5-watt TD 3 radio. Also a ham radio operator, I do have dual band third party "rubber duckies" connected to my 2 meter/70 cm handie-talkies. Any guidance?

It depends on the radio. Some radios come with very good stock antennas. That being said, I've used dual band VHF/UHF ham antennas on my GMRS radios and they worked just fine. No doubt a GMRS specific antenna will work better but the dual bands have worked just fine for me.

The smiley antennas are the best I have used but I refuse to pay $25 plis shipping for an antenna for a $25 radio

so I use 771g antennas on everything and they seam to do good for us at 30 plus miles  each and every day for work and play.  depending on terrain we have gotten 50miles from them on 5ish watt hand helds.  I can’t imagine needing more or spending more for the same or less performance.

Another vote for Smiley antennas. I have their GMRS antenna on a couple Boofwangs and also on my Icom ID50 (when using GMRS frequencies).
The Nagoya 701G & 771G are on my other Boofwangs and they work great too.

Have several 771s and just got Smiley slim duck last week.  I think both feel about the same for recieve/transmit.  Definitely way better than stock antenna.

Also have the foldable Abbree ones,  they receive the best but are way too bulky to walk around with.

I have a couple of TD-H3s and the OEMs work OK.  The Smiley Rubber Duck works better and is much smaller.  It's the best of both worlds.  The Nagoya 771G beats them all for distance.  When I was doing some testing I was able to get 1.3 miles on the Smiley before it quit abruptly and the Nagoya went out to 1.8 miles and still had more but I didn't want to walk more.  Most of the time I use the Smiley because it convenient.  But if I think distance will be involved or I'm going to be using the repeater at 21 miles away I'll use the Nagoya.
