WSDE521 Posted July 14 Report Posted July 14 Has anyone used this radio, if so do you know how well they work and if they are waterproof or ( water resistant) ! My family wants to buy me a quality radio for my late Father’s Day gift and my new hobby! I have been reading what I can find on them and from what I have read they are reliable radios!! I have not seen anything in the reviews about waterproof or how water resist they are! Any suggestions or input will be greatly appreciated. Quote

I’m pretty sure the Notarubicon YouTube channel has a review of it. It’s a decent one. It’s not waterproof though. In the ad it says IP55, which is water resistant, but not suitable for full immersion. Only you can predict if it has to withstand immersion. Also consider the KG935 or the KG905. WRUU653 Posted July 14 Report Posted July 14 (edited) I have the Ham version of this radio. It works well, supper het and has AM bands if you want that. It is not waterproof, it is IP55 which means it can handle water to the face so would likely be okay in the rain. It comes with lots of preprogrammed scanner frequencies. The screen is not great outdoors. Of the Wouxon GMRS radios I would go with the KG-935G Plus. Although It isn’t waterproof either it is slightly higher rated at IP66. It isn’t supper het but you can’t tell. It won’t receive AM air bands but I don’t really listen to that and as for all the scanner frequencies I mostly put my own in. The KG-935G Plus is my favorite GMRS radio, solid and a bit easier to see outside. That’s just my opinion. On a pricier side the KG-Q10G will get you there with the waterproof IP67 rating. It scans a bit slower. My only gripe with the KG-Q10 radios is the lack of an indicator telling you if it was the upper or lower display that received the most recent transmission which would be nice if you happen to be monitoring two channel/frequencies at the same time. Edit- this turned out to be an issue with my radio and apparently is not indicative of the KG-Q10 radios. I recommend watching some reviews on YouTube and think of how you plan to use it. I hope some of this helps. Good luck. Edited October 31 by WRUU653 Clarification SteveShannon, WSEZ and WRHS218 1 2 Quote

Guest Posted July 14 Report Posted July 14 I have many radios from super cheap to super expensive. I have a kg-uv9. I’ll tell you, it does exactly the same distance as a boofwang uv9g and the boofwang is totally water proof. Mine have all been dropped in the stream crossings and left out in the rain and snow. My boofwang even gets better signal reports on all the local repeaters. We use them every day for work play and animal emergency evac. After having radios from $20-$3000 I’ll never pay more then $50 for a gmrs hand held. They all do about 40miles for me in my area. Quote
WSDE521 Posted July 14 Author Report Posted July 14 Well I checked several radios and I decided on this radio! I hope I made the right decision!!! I watched several videos on YouTube and this one had a lot more positive reviews than most. It seems to be able to withstand moisture not surmising which I don’t have any desire to put it under water. I sent it to my son and daughter, they have purchased it for me! It will be here in a week or less. Anyway please let me know what you think!! WRHS218, WRDU469, WRYZ926 and 1 other 4 Quote

I use GMRS in pursuit of my rocketry hobby, but GMRS reawakened my interest in radio which led me to get my ham radio license. Yes, GMRS can be used for a business. I am considering getting my ham license but with the stage 4 brain cancer, I find it difficult to remember many things! I am getting better due to treatment with immunotherapy Once a month. But not much I can pass a ham license test even if I study for a long time! The GMRS is simple. I am still learning what the acronyms mean but I will learn! Thanks for your comment Quote

Anything can be a hobby. Even the way Randy uses them they are at least a tool for his hobby. Most of all grandkids are the best and certainly a reason to be around. Best wishes on your health. I think you will be happy with your choice. Hobby - "an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure." Quote

Agree. I played with CB in high school but stopped using it for years (and that was just an interest and a semi-hobby about radios) Currently I got GMRS radios to coordinate and communicate with other cyclists that I ride with as a group. I usually lead the group rides and another rider (who already had a HAM license) follows at the end of the ride group to make sure no one gets lost. So we are using our GMRS radios to coordinate and keep everyone safe. and... it reignited my interest in radio in general.. so yeah someday I may get a HAM license too, but for now it is an interesting tool to use with my hobby of cycling. That’s is my reason, we go camping in the mountains often and use them just in case someone wonders off the trail or they get hurt or anything they want others to know!! I have always enjoyed camping and hiking, I use to be on a search and rescue team , I have quite a bit of tracking skills and I also did high angle rescue, such as repelling down to get someone that was stuck on the side of a cliff!! I really enjoyed doing all of that. I thought my son and daughter how to survive in the woods along with several survival skills , such as how to use a compass and map. They both know how to repel and now we are teaching my grandchildren that are old enough the same skills. But yes I want to use the GMRS radios for those reasons. Thank you! When I get negative comments on anything that is meant to be an insult I don’t respond to it!! I just ignore it! Doesn’t mean anything to me! I have a thick skin always have had it. I worked Bail Enforcement for many years and learned to just let remarks like that slide off my shoulder and I move on! Just because someone doesn’t agree with what I am doing doesn’t mean it’s wrong! Quote
WRYZ926 Posted July 15 Report Posted July 15 I agree that you will be happy with the KG-935G Plus. I have one that is my goto hand held for GMRS use. Best wishes on your treatment. I hope everything goes well for you. Quote
