Guest wsdv362 Posted July 24 Report Posted July 24 Total newb here. just go the TID-H3 for GMRS usage. Okay, tried to search this but no luck. I'm sure it covered but.... Are there set words to say my sign? If so which "system" is typically used? or can I just make up? ie. military? I think there are other "official" ones. it will mostly be family (wife, same license) can/should we say it differently? Male vs female would be obvious. Something like Whiskey Sour Double Volume 362? or use an established "system"? Also, How do I initiate a call to the family radio? Thanks for any help, Thanks Quote

If you decide to speak phonetically my opinion (worth nothing) is that you should use the NATO phonetics. They are designed not to be easily confused. For instance, in your example you use the words sour and double, both of which can be easily confused with other words flower and bubble on a poor connection. The NATO words would be Delta and Sierra and there are no other words in the NATO alphabet that sound similar enough to be confused. But it’s entirely up to you. Guest Posted July 24 Report Posted July 24 Yup. Doesn’t matter at all. I just say the letters and numbers. Some repeaters have different rules. as for family… just use names. The fcc doesn’t care as long as you say the call sign in some way every 15m and at the end. Quote
WRXB215 Posted July 24 Report Posted July 24 I use plain spelling unless the person on the other end has trouble understanding me. Then I use the NATO phonetic alphabet to clear it up. B and V sometimes get confused and also D and T. amaff, WRXR255, SteveShannon and 1 other 4 Quote
Sonicgott Posted August 11 Report Posted August 11 WSDV362 - Whiskey-Sierra-Delta-Victor-362. NATO phonetics aren't as often used in GMRS, but it does help. Mine, WSCL244 - Whiskey-Sierra-Charlie-Lima-244. Note that Lima is "Lee-muh," and not like the bean. Quote

GMRS is for normal people speaking normal english. If you want to sound and talk like a dork get a H.A.M. radio license. TrikeRadio, Sonicgott and WRXB215 1 2 Quote

WSDC279 Posted September 8 Report Posted September 8 Just talk as you always do...no big deal..... Quote
FlatTop Posted September 9 Report Posted September 9 Just say your number....then if anyone gets pissy about it...give them the whole call sign but say it real fast so no one can understand you....end the sentence with QSL? Quote
WRUE951 Posted September 9 Report Posted September 9 Don't even bother, 'Some People' claim the FCC doesn't care. Quote
linx Posted September 9 Report Posted September 9 You can use whatever you like to help someone understand your callsign. I typically only use phonetics if someone doesn't understand, however we usually refer to each other by name, handle, or callsign suffix "789". You can use NATO such as "Whiskey Romeo Victor Yankee 7 8 9" or some people use what the Sheriff's office here uses "William Robert Victor Young 7 8 9". I find that GMRS is pretty casual, so it's not likely anyone is going to try and get up in your face for not using NATO phonetics. Quote
