Baofeng UV 5RM: Challenges with successful TXng with tone settings.

Good Day.   I own a new pair of Baofeng UV5-RM HTs , and am using CHIRP (using Baofeng 5 RM on their list) for all my programming, including local repeaters.   Among those repeaters  in the Sacramento, CA area are Sacramento SHARP, Mountain Top 1, RV 575 and SAC 625.  I tried to program all the right settings, including and cross tones.   I can key up SHARP and Mountain Top 1, but cannot hear myself on  the other HT that I monitor,  but can hear the courtesy tones and squelch tails when I release the PTT. As for SAC 625 and RV 575 with the settings given to me, nothing.  Any help would be great. Thank you. Michael, WSET483.

Start by clearing out all of the receiver tones on the repeaters you don’t hear.  That way you’ll hear anything transmitted on those frequencies.  If you still don’t hear the repeaters, you’re out of range or one the wrong frequency or the repeater are down.

Then work on your transmitter configuration only.  Get closer if you have to and ask others to listen for your transmission.

Carrying two radios and hoping to hear yourself on one while transmitting on the other often fails because your strong transmitter deafens the receiver of the other handheld.  That’s called desense. That may easily be why you hear the courtesy tones and squelch tails after you release the PTT. Others may be hearing your transmission. Ask them to respond.

I’ve never had desense issues but put your second radio on the matching simplex channel and move it 20 feet from the other radio.  Now try….  Also do you hear other people on the repeater?   How far from the repeater are you and do you have good line of sight?  What antennas are you running?   Just because you can hear the repeater and even open squelch does not mean your voice is getting and good enough to be re transmitted.

Thank you.  I placed the two HT's much further apart, and was able to successfully test TX Mountain Top 1 and Sharp.
