Baofeng UV-5G Pro repeater setup

Question

Posted

I am a newbie GMRS user. I have the Baofeng UV-5G pro. I can't seem to get it to work on the repeater channel. When I try to use CHIRP, this model doesn't come up as an option.

Can I only set it up on frequency mode? Or can I use channel mode? When I try to program in the transmit code on channel mode, it doesn't save.

I'd appreciate any help I can get! Thanks!

It should have Atleast 8 pre programmed repeaters channels.   Just select one and add he tones.

however chirp is 100xs easier.  Double check your cable is plugged in. Double check your port selection.

When I try to add the tones, it doesn't retain them. I followed the directions in the manual, but it won't hold the tones. And CHIRP doesn't have the model to select.

Try turning up the volume on the radio to about 3/4 full and then do the download again.

My UV-5R (2012'ish model) works at low volume and my UV-21 Pro V2 needs upwards of 1/2 to 3/4 volume.

I read that using type GM-5RH worked, and tried it. It worked for me. I also had issues and found that it is critical to fully seat the cable into to HT. Finally, I didn’t realize I couldn’t program to transmit on amateur bands, so GMRS only for transmissions (I didn’t fully research this). Otherwise, all good!

I’m experiencing the same with my UV-5G Pros also. The pre-programmed repeater channel offsets rx/tx freq correctly, but will not save tones.

This is true for all channel-specific settings on all channels, not just repeaters.

It appears the only way to use tones is by switching to frequency mode, which undermines the whole purpose of an “easy-to-use” GMRS-specific model.

I have the the same radios and the repeater channels will not hold/store the tones. I have not used chirp yet so I am referring to adding tones to the pre-existing repeater channels.

The temporary work around is to program the channel / tones manually.

Go to YouTube channel NotaRubicon and look for the video entitled

"EASY! Baofeng set up to use a repeater ham or GMRS". Follow these steps exactly and you'll be good to go.

Do not worry about the tone being DPL as is the case with the Mt. Lemmon repeater. This just means it's a DCS tone (Baofeng's version of DPL as opposed to CTCSS which is Baofeng's version of PL tone.

Is this ideal? No

Does this defeat the purpose of GMRS simplicity? Yes as WRVQ719 pointed out previously.

Is a firmware fix out already or coming soon? Likely

So for now, follow the steps Randolfo so kindly laid out in the video and enjoy.
