I was granted access to a repeater in my area. It comes through loud and clear. But what I notice is that there are check-ins from people 3-4 states away. I thought this was just a local repeater.

I have reached out to the owner, but have not heard back. Thanks!

So 1st if it’s linked it’s against the rules.   (Let’s not get into this again).

2nd how big are the states?  I’m in California and can talk to Nevada and Arizona on one repeater. It has a radius of well over 200 miles.

3rd how far are you from the repeater?  What radio are you using? What antenna are you using?  Do you have line if sight to the repeater?

4th the best way to learn about a repeater is to be patient and wait to hear back from the owner.

It is probably a linked repeater. If you don't hear from the owner you could try to figure out where the folks are that you hear checking in and see if you can find the repeater they are using. Or you could ask someone who is checking in what system they are on. They may or may not answer since linking is a touchy subject these days.

I may have used the wrong terminology. Perhaps the repeater goes farther than I thought.

There is really no way of knowing until your able to talk to users or owner.
