Does someone know what the GMRS transmit limitations are for this radio? I have the latest firmware and set to GMRS mode. I added my programming for several repeaters, etc. I noticed that I cannot transmit (only receive) on channels 55 and up. Ch 1-54 I can transmit on simplex or repeaters.

Others see this issue or is this known? I could not find anything in the manual about this unless I totally missed it.

Yeah that is dumb. I wish I knew this earlier. Thx

Loads of posts about all the issues with this radio.  It’s not as good as some people would have people believe.  Sorry it didn’t work out

It will transmit and receive on all GMRS frequencies 1-22 plus others you program. Not sure what 55 and up means.

Love my H3, definitely the best radio by far in its price point.

It means any GMRS frequency programmed in to Channels 55 or higher will not transmit. Sounds like the DIY channels for GMRS are limited.

O, damn that's a lot of GMRS repetitive frequencies to program in there since there are only 22. I don't have that issue, but i also haven't added GMRS passed 36. But i do have many other frequencies programmed and have no issues.

It means the channel slots the radios has... (there 199 of them) will not transmit on channel above 54. You can only put in listen only there.
So any custom legitimate GMRS frequencies can only be put in below 55.

I found this out when I was starting to add a lot more repeaters into my radio.

Only way around this... is to unlock it in NORMAL mode and be very careful how you program so you don't set something up that has you transmitting on non permitted frequencies.

That was going to be my next question/test of the radio. Will the other channels transmit on GMRS frequencies if the radio is in normal mode. You have done this and it works?

I was going to say. lol 54 is a ton, but yeah i have mine in NORMAL mod so thats why its not been an issue.

Do you have a Ham license? GMRS license?

I personally have not done it but heard from others that they have.

NORMAL mode unlocks all the GMRS or HAM frequency "Safeguards" and rules... which of course makes it non compliant.

You just have to be careful and know what you are doing when programming in normal so you don't end up transmitting unintentionally on frequencies that could actually get you in trouble.

and know the Wide/Narrow and lower wattage levels allowed on GMRS "channels" as well to stay in compliance. Especially in the GMRS channels 8-14 where the power is half a watt and narrow... otherwise you can potentially send interference to local repeaters on those channels.

It's not a bad radio. You can unlock it or even put a VERY much more unlocked firmware on it (which I have) and it does what you mostly expect.

For the price and features, it's a great little radio. Definitely not the best of the best, just ask the Queen about that and you will get a good radio, but it can and will get you started with a small and very lightweight unit that can get you some fars... as they say.

Just GMRS. I wouldn't be programming any HAM frequencies.

Then put it in NORMAL mode and make sure you never transmit on frequencies you are not aloud to. It's really awesome in NORMAL mode but you will have to start from scratch and program everything manually.

When I get time, I will give it a shot. I have all my programming saved, so it shouldn't be a problem to reload or import. Thanks for the information.

You can easily restore the programming.

  1. Backup the programming with CHIRP
  2. Flash radio to NORMAL
  3. Read the radio AGAIN (this is per CHIRP) so CHIRP has the layout of the memory
  4. Re-upload your saved config via CHIRP back to the radio

These were the steps I followed and it worked flawlessly for me. I have done this going from GMRS to ham to NORMAL modes and back. It has worked each time.

I have both the H-3 and H-8, and couldn’t be happier with them ! Fortunately, I live near a fantastic repeater, and I talk all over the place. They work so well, I don’t plan on having a GMRS base station.

I sent a letter to Tidradio.  Lets see if they respond to it and what they say.

Hi Luxi,
I was trying to program CH55 on my TD-H3 and noticed that I can't set it to a transmit frequency.  Anything above CH55 is receive only.  Is this correct?  Is this a known limitation or is this just the way it's designed?  Or is this something that needs to be looked into by the tech people?  I found this on a GMRS forum and tested it out and found it to be true.  I'm running version GMRS_240702.  Thanks.

Thank you! They didn't even respond to my email. Interesting they call a radio and "machine".
