Question

Posted

I have several HT's that I use, being that I do a lot of driving, I recently purchased a radioddity DB20-G mobile unit. The unit it came in a bundle with a 2.5dg gain with a 19.7" tall antenna.

I am still rather new to GMRS and learning about all the maths involved with some of these things. I drive between city and rural farm country pretty regularly, though I work and live in urban settings. I understand that there is a difference between high and low dg antenna, with them working better in one or the other of those environments. Does anyone have suggestions on: 1. a better antenna to get, or is the one I have sufficient for now, (key word "now" I'm sure the hobby will take me to new setups soon). 2. does anyone have suggestions on a better city antenna to have as my main antenna?

I appreciate any advice or suggestions.

Just use that antenna.  If you do choose to upgrade the MXTA26 from Midland is excellent as a mobile antenna but you will also need to get an NMO mount for it. It has a gain of about 6 dBi but don’t get too hung up on that. Midland has a 20% off sale right now. Code is REC20.

Thank you, I appreciate the feedback and the info for the sale!

You’re radiating around 30w with your set up.  The mxta26 will radiate 65 watts. If your current set up works run with it until it doesn’t then upgrade.

My Preferences For Good Mobile Antennas:

1.  Laird 5/8 Wave B4503-L    -   Good For All Around Use

2.  Laird 1/4 Wave QW450   -   Good For City / Urban Or Hilly Terrain

Both Have Been Outstanding Performers......
