Riddle me this..

Question

Posted

I have a Retivis repeater set up at my brothers house 4 miles away..462.6500 with a 136 tone.. Has a N9TAX antenna at 10 feet..It is just for comms in our valley and is centrally located.. Works well for our needs helping with the hills..

My base is a 20 watt radio with a vertical at 25 feet..It gets out very well..

Now there is a repeater 60 miles out that is also 462.6500 but with a tone of 141..

What is confusing is when I broadcast on the far off repeater at 141, my brother says I come thru on my repeater on 136.. It is definitely not receiving the far off repeater on what would be channel 19, but my base is hitting it even with the different tone..

Sitting here scratching my head and thought what the heck, I'll ask...

Not enough selectivity with the tones.

I have my repeater on 100 and 7 miles away there is a repeater on 103.4.  On occasion I can trigger it with my base.  I kept getting this full quieting signal on occasion so I played with the tones only to find out all I had to do is go up one and there it was.

I believe It is possible if someone is listening to a legitimate  transmission coming out of your repeater (a correctly matching tone opened the repeater's squelch)

...if a stronger transmission signal comes in on the same frequency -- even having a different tone -- there can be a delay in detection of the tone and that signal from the other repeater or even a strong simplex station nearby can piggyback on the opened squelch and break in on your repeater... or on the receiving station (your bother's) temporarily, until the radio squelch recognizes the tone and cuts if off.

Or one of the radio manufacturers (or both) saved money on a less expensive CTCSS circuit.

The difference between 136.5 and 141.3 is what?  About 5%?  Probably within the tolerance of that Retevis repeater's tone detect circuit.

I would try setting the repeater to a PL of something like 203.5 and see if that fixes the issue.

Yes, all of the tones are correctly set.. First thing I checked..  My brother doesn't have a base, he just uses his HT..He likes the repeater there so close because he can transmit from inside the house.. I might add that once, while I was on the other repeater that he thought I was calling him and he answered and I did in fact hear him..  Hmmm?
