I've got a RA86, and I'm trying to program some local repeaters for a local club. The club is very strict about keeping their repeater info private, so I will not be providing crutial information regarding this. However, the issue I am having is I cannot figure out what the RX, RX PL, TX AND TX PL tones would be displayed as on the radio. I've hit a road block trying to figure this out, so any suggestions, links or info would be wonderfully appreicated!

PL is the same as CTCSS.

All of the options when I push the menu button are as listed below:

  • POWER LEVEL
  • TX CODE
  • RX CODE
  • SQUELCH
  • MIC GAIN
  • REPEATER
  • CALL TONE
  • KEYTONE
  • ROGER BEEP
  • VOX TOT
  • BACK LIGHT
  • BRIGHTNESS
  • SLEEP TIMER
  • SPEAKER SELECTION

With that all in mind, how will I know which one of those is the RX PL, the TX and the TX PL when those are what the club lists?

Are you programming on a computer it’s 1000xs easier.   It’s only 2 in to the repeater and out from the repeater.   This is honestly the same question asked 10xs. Week.   It’s really not this difficult to do.   We do t need to know the exact tones just put them in tx and rx.  Some lazy people will chime in and say you do t even need the rx.  If you can program tx you can program rx. It’s exactly the same.   I would however recommend you reach out the the repeater club. After all that’s what a club should be for.

Neither is leaving helpful, socially-acceptable answers - but, alas, "some people" are totally incapable of figuring it out and make themselves look like social-retards every time they leave a response..

@WRYF792 the settings you are looking for are the TX code and the RX code.  I have given away my RA86, so I can't look at the radio or the user manual for you, but if i recall, in the TX and RX code lists you will be able to choose from either a PL/CTC tone or a DTC/DPL tone.  all you need to do is find the NUMBER (dont worry if it starts with a P, C, or D), just find the NUMBER and select it from the list.

I have reached out to the club, I do know that they have a lot of helpful members who are glad to help people like me, so fingers crossed! Worse case, somebody in the club has a cable I can borrow, because I agree, a computer makes programming completley painless! Sadly, I do not have a programming cable for the radio. I work at a dealership and it was in a truck we bought from auction, and they did not have the cable in the truck when they sold it.

Pretty decent free find though nontheless!

The radio has TX and RX, what's throwing me off is the club lists the tones as RX TL and TX PL, but they also show info for just TX and RX. Thank you for the info about the number though. That is incredibly good to know!

Disregard the letters "PL".. and for now, disregard the RX tone as it is optional and will just confuse you more - in the TX menu, find the number and select it.. This whole thing should take no more than 15 seconds..
