Having trouble with KPG-46 USB Programming Cable

Question

Posted

Any ideas how I can solve my programming cable issue? Brand new win11 computer to a Kenwood TK-880. The computer says the cable is good, however when i try to load or receive data to or from the radio I get an alarm stating to check cable connection and/or com port settings. I'm at a loss.

I bought another cable that is arriving today. We will see......

The new cable worked. Make sure you buy a FTDI cable with the chip in it. No drivers to load. Just plug and play.

All cables with a chip require a driver.  Some versions of Windows have the drivers pre-installed, but not all.  Because there were a lot of counterfeit FTDI cables, the pre-installed drivers in Windows 11 check for counterfeits which sometimes can cause problems.

And that is why I avoid any and all cheap cables with clone/pirated Prolific chips in them. It's bad enough that Prolific drivers have not been updated in years.

I've had issues with some cloned Prolific chips  on Windows and MacOS. I have a couple that I never could get to work on either operating system. Even Linux doesn't like those cables.
