It all depends on how long you want to use the radio before having to recharge the battery. How much you transmit will also determine what size battery you will need. I would start out with a minimum of a 10 amp hour LifPo 4 battery. That will last you from 5-6 hours or longer depending on how much you transmit on 20 watts.

Awesome, thanks for the instructions, I have tried receiving and transmitting according to your diagram, and both of my radios are working! Now its just a matter of finding a working repeater, I will be traveling tomorrow and will go through a couple of repeaters to see if I can get in touch with one of them.

I have a question, I want to make my retevis mobile and add a battery to it. what is the smallest battery I can use? I have found these blue wrapped rechargeable batteries on amazon but which one do i choose?

Or just “force” it to use one of the other UHF band plans which are selectable in the software. It will complain when you go to program it, but it will allow you to do it anyway, and it will work. I’ve done this numerous times with various Kenwood VHF and UHF handheld and mobile radios without issue. 780’s / 880’s / 863G’s, etc, etc.

Sorry I didn't get a notice of a reply. Yes I plan on 2ea Antenna's. GMRS will be used trails and desert exploring. I assume since the solar panels are mounted above the alumnum roof is the reason it will not work to provide a ground plane. So..Could I add this http://Nagoya GPK-01 to gain the ability to mount on the crossbars? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUV6p5nfK3c&t=191s Would the Nagoya also work for the 2m?

I have it mounted out in the open on my fold down cup holder so it gets plenty of air flow around it. Even with it off in my enclosed truck in the blistering AZ. summer it'll be hot, everything in the truck is hot so I've never felt the need to check the temp.

Don't waste your time or money on that cable as it won't work. I have tried mono to mon splitters and mono to stereo splitters, none of them will work with a standard mono speaker. The only way to get it to work is to use a mono to stereo splitter AND a true stereo speaker (with left and right speakers). See my earlier posts above.

Probably yes, but that doesn't make sense since that radio doesn't have an internal battery.

I think that they meant internal to the radio. I tested it both on the DC socket in the truck and on an Ecoflow power bank with the same results (or lack thereof). It's returned and the replacement should be here tomorrow.

You mean the car battery? The GMRS20V2 is a mobile radio. There would be other symptoms with the vehicle if the battery had an internal short.

Or keep it and use it for spare parts that are common with the 880-1 version. Sometimes finding spare parts for old radios is nearly impossible. That's why a few guys keep junk chassis's around to pick over.

To limit range. FRS is intended to be used for short distances using handheld radios and no licenses. As soon as a high gain antenna is installed the range for two watts is basically the same as GMRS radios.

Definitely a problem for it to be that hot. I wouldn’t expect the voltmeter to reflect a significant voltage drop unless your battery were nearly dead. You’d have to view the current on an ammeter to see how much the radio was drawing. Let us know how the replacement works.

Have you noticed if the radio is getting to hot to hold (i.e. >130F)?
