Durake got a reaction from cdesigns in My tree hidden GMRS base antenna
I was talking to some operators on the Dallas County REACT System and they said there is a form on the ARRL website that you can put in your callsign and it will print up a paper to give to your HOA stating the laws regarding antennas, they said something about a legislator passing something that allows Ham and GMRS Operators to keep their antennas up, because when the Public Safety Systems goes down? Who do ya call! Lol. I've tried looking and have only found more details regarding the passing of it. Maybe someone can find it? If I hear them on today Ill ask for more info. Otherwise I've heard them talking about using a push up pole and put it up at night, although I'd get tired of doing it every single night..

I love my Tera TR-505's! They really talk and have all the options one could want. They just feel good in the hand, sort of like a high end business radio, and I can't say enough about the 15 inch optional antennae, those guys really extend the range.

I programmed the last 5 channels with (1-5) MURS frequencies, 1-10 GMRS simplex, and 11-12 for two local repeaters. Works quite well for me. I have talked 17 miles to a Cobra walkie from a mountain ridge and talked between Tera's about 7 miles over average terrain with the 15 inch antennas.

The problem with any cable that uses 'foil' as the inner shield is that over time it will begin interacting with the braided wire shield and become 'noisy'. This doesn't happen immediately and may take many months to develop, but it isn't a question of "if" as much as a question of "when..." :

How big of a mast are you looking to use ? Our SAR team purchased the mast here on ebay - http://www.ebay.com/itm/ANTENNA-TRIPOD-29FT-ALUMINUM-PORTABLE-TOWER-MAST-KIT-NEW/361384099911?_trksid=p2047675.c100009.m1982&_trkparms=aid%3D888007%26algo%3DDISC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131227121020%26meid%3Dc8638571b9a64db4b78809ad1b1b3bc3%26pid%3D100009%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26sd%3D360908000786

It works awesome and is light enough to carry up a trail. As for cable I tried various options from RG213 to 1/2" superflex. When all said and done we had the best luck with RG142. The loss for 30' is not enough difference than the 1/4" superflex hard line and holds up much better. I liked the 1/2" and 1/4" hard line but after both were kinked in half on the first deployment i knew they wouldn't work.

Durake reacted to JLeikhim in FCC Rule Changes Negatively Impact GMRS Licensees
I want to point out that the FCC is once again proposing to encroach inside the band edges of the GMRS band .

Recently the FCC has approved waivers for several commercial part 90 operators to encroach in this manner. I apologize in advance for cross posting this on other boards, but this is important and is likely not to be noticed by many.

This started in about 2013 when Mobile Relay Associates of California requested to encroach on Part 95 band edges in LA and Miami. The GMRS community did not react and the FCC subsequently awarded waivers to permit MRA do do this without any reservation, nor any technical data in support that doing so would not cause interference to incumbent 25 KHz GMRS operations.

At a later date MRA attempted to obtain similar waivers to encroach on other spectrum and has been denied because "the assignment of non Part 90 spectrum to Part 90 licensees was contrary to FCC procedures". So in one case the FCC ignores their own procedures and assigns GMRS Part 95 spectrum to MRA and in another case, the FCC denies MRA access to spectrum which was part of the auctioned Radio Common Carrier band.

If you are a GMRS licensee, I urge you to respond vociferously to this FCC NPRM and make your voice heard,

"On its own motion but suggested by recent waiver requests, the FCC proposed to make available for PLMR use frequencies that are on the band edge between the industrial/business (I/B) pool and either general mobile radio service (GMRS) or broadcast auxiliary service (BAS) spectrum, to make certain frequencies that are designated for central station alarm operations available for other PLMR uses. The FCC also made certain updates and corrections and amended its rules to accommodate certain railroad operations.

Specifically in the I/B pool, the FCC proposed to amend the frequency table to add frequency pairs 451/456.00625 MHz and 451/456.0125 MHz, with the limitation that the authorized bandwidth not exceed 6 kilohertz.

The commission also proposed to amend the I/B pool frequency table to add frequency pairs 462/467.5375 MHz and 462/467.7375 MHz, with the limitation that the authorized bandwidth not exceed 4 kilohertz. “We tentatively conclude that it would be in the public interest to make additional frequencies available to PLMR applicants that can be utilized without overlapping the occupied bandwidth of currently assignable frequencies and without causing harmful interference,” the NPRM said."

Actually, if you look up Part 95J it actually states that grandfathered licenses (that are still active) are to be given priority on the dots. Also where the clause about radios presaging the creation of the service being able to operate on the service.

Wouldn't it be nice if the FCC put MURS under GMRS and offered licencees those frequencies at GMRS power levels.

MURS is unlicensed (technically "licensed by rule", so you can still have your privileges revoked), but two of the frequencies are/were formerly assigned as business band so there may potentially be some overlap.

According to the FCC: None of the MURS channels are assigned for the exclusive use of any user. You must cooperate in the selection and use of the channels in order to make the most effective use of them and to reduce the possibility of interference. (Source)

So... nope. WalMart must play nicely with everyone else on the MURS frequencies. Although the stipulation about making the "most effective use" of them would probably give some weight to a commercial business over someone who wants to monkey around with that business by messing with their communications.

Durake reacted in Must family live with you to operate under your license?
The rules years ago allowed business to operate on GMRS before the name changed from Class A Citizens Radio Service and those were grandfathered in unless they let their license expire.I have one guy a few counties away that had a license since the 1800s I believe.

He had been taking advantage of GMRS and was basically selling radios to anyone and covering them under his license and selling air time to the county wide transportation system and they were non-stop chatter from 7 am-5 pm rendering the frequency useless to licensed users.I did some checking and he had several police using it at night as a chit chat channel plus he had it set up with multiple PL tones so it was hit or miss to try and find a free tone.

I got so tired of not being able to use the frequency that I actually called the guy out on the air and advised him it was illegal for him to be using GMRS as he was.I received a immediate reply over the radio saying please call me on the phone and let's talk about it.

I have not heard them in years but to blatantly set up a government entity and everyone in the town  on a GMRS frequency unlicensed and knowingly do it and getting called out for doing it would cause some embarrassment especially with the wide area repeater he was employing...William
