Buying a Kenwood TK880 used - Need it programmed
FlatTop replied to FlatTop's question in Technical Discussion
Well on mine, it doesn't support trunking, so LTR is moot I guess. By holding down the D button and powering on, I do not get the Menu screen. So I assumed it needed a resistor removed. I get this message when I write to the radio from the programming software. As far as I know I haven't entered any thing that's a new Version 2 feature. -
Well that explains that. I never knew what it meant. Thanks

Buying a Kenwood TK880 used - Need it programmed

Mine is not a Version 2, I assume it is a Version 1. It can not be front panel programmed, so I assume the resistor has to be removed for that feature. What's LTR? It's also my understanding this radio doesn't do trunking, only conventional. Seems to be working fine. No idea what the age is, is there a way to tell from the serial number? -
What time does the popcorn stand open? Go to https://hamstudy.org and work at the study guide for two weeks, and you will pass. My teen age grandkids all passed on the first try.

I scan a lot so I leave the PL tones off....wouldn't want to filter out some neighborhood entertainment. A lot of the kids around here have FRS radios and apparently a endless supply of batteries. It gets pretty hilarious to listen to from time to time. Indy 600 is my priority channel so when it has traffic it's in charge. Oh and a question....what the heck is a interstitial? "Mr. Radioguy I am sorry to have to tell you that diagnostic review of your never ending symptoms, indicate a subdural edema of the left lower interstitial fibroid jabasscopian nerve channel. Certain expensive, yet usually not successful, treatments will need to begin immediately."

uno taco quatro frijole des...Mother Goose, this is the filthy beast....do you copy? I'm a sad ham that thinks whatever radio I spend my money on, is the best one I can have at that time. If CCR is in the budget but the Batt Phone ain't, well a licensee has to make a fiscal call. I realize others play radio differently than I do, at times, and it bothers me not in the least.

Patience grasshoppers! ? I think mine took maybe a week back in February. It'll get here eventually. Sometime the FCC is down, which seems to happen more and more frequently.

Buying a Kenwood TK880 used - Need it programmed
FlatTop replied to FlatTop's question in Technical Discussion
OK I got the software and the cable and programmed the TK-880 today and it's working. Now I have some questions. When I wrote the setup to the radio I got this warning "The target radio is NOT a Version 2.0 radio. The new version 2.0 radio features entered will NOT work in this earlier production radio. Anyone know what the features diffs between a TK-880 and a TK-880 V2 are? All I programmed was a priority group (channel), all the FRS frequencies, four repeaters with TX/RX codes....it all seems to be working. I have the manual for a 780/880/980 and will continue reading it. This TK-880 is the 25w model. BTW the front panel programming requires the removal of a SMT resistor off the front board....I decided not to do that. Eyes ain't what they used to be. -
Anyone in the Indy area capable of programming this radio for me? I don't have software or cable. I'm needy. Kenwood TK-880 Thanks

I have a GMRS radio I want to sell. Can I post it here?

Questions about wattage versus antenna in my situation
FlatTop replied to WRWM519's topic in General Discussion
What was the coax used for before you bought the house? It could be RG6 which will be even greater loss at UHF frequencies. RG6 is 75 ohm coax and typically used for TV antenna or or cable TV feedline. It's ok to use on HF. -
If I don't like the way a product is licensed, I don't buy it, but I don't steal it. Intellectual property theft is a real problem.

I know the FCC ULS system was down again late last week but only for a couple days. I must have gotten lucky. I applied and paid on Feb 21 and had my call on Feb 23.
-
I totally understand that. If I have to steal the software, then I don't need the radio. Stealing from Kenwood doesn't keep them in business.

I know Motorola has the reputation of being professional grade, most sturdy, and best of all...but I shy away from them because there are too many models, they are hard to know what they are even capable of, and it seems like the programming software is a mystery, or only runs on PC-DOS 2.2 or Windows 3.1....since I have never been interested in the brand, I know virtually nothing about them. Maybe we need a net to discuss the wonderfulness of Motorola HT's and mobiles. Lots and lots of folks swear by them, they always seem to demand much higher prices, and from some of the pictures I've seen mud, dirt, dust and filth don't seem to slow them down.

What an excellent idea.

Is there a New Indy 600? The map shows two now.

Looks like the Ghost Indy600 is no longer on the map. Cool beans. -

Especially if they are posting access codes. -
Hey I'm all for the Indy 600 moving to Greenwood....but pretty sure that isn't happening. Somehow someone has added a Indy 600 repeater system to the map..

Oh boy. YouTube is an awesome way to burn through a few hours in what seems like a few minutes. It's so easy to go down the multitudes of rabbit holes on YouTube. I might start out looking at Radio related videos, then I see a video about fishing, then more about fishing, cooking fish, cleaning fish, uh oh...there's one about how to make biscuits and gravy, and another one about guys dumpster diving for fame and profits....then here comes one about musicians, old bands...next thing you know it's dinner time.

I looked on Google, looked on the myGMRS maps, and looked in Radio Reference....and I don't see any GMRS repeaters between Hopkinsville KY and Ft Campbell. There is one just north of Russellville called Honeymoon Farm on 462.600 (no tones) with a small 5 mile foot print. There is one in/near Glasgow KY, Glasgow 625 on 462.625 with tones and a 20 mile footprint, southwest of Glasgow by about 20 miles. Other than that, I don't see much else. There could be some unlisted private repeaters, but who knows.

Are GMRS repeaters required to identify every 15 minutes?
FlatTop replied to WRAX891's topic in FCC Rules Discussion
OH MAN!!! I forgot about those... so good.
