    Mobile antenna

You didn't say if you were using it in a car. I was assuming you were using it in the house. More details will help.

    Mobile antenna

Hello and welcome! Most mobile antenna's require a ground plane such as the metal of a car body to work properly. If it's a magnet mount you can place it on a cookie sheet or pizza pan which will provide a ground plane. You will get better performance outside the house and as high as you can get it. Same with the handheld. UHF (GMRS) is mainly line of sight. The more stuff the signal has to penetrate the weaker it will be and the shorter your range.
  3. Glad to help. Thanks for the report on BTWR support.
  4. And yes the Moni button is monitor. It turns the squelch off so you can hear everything even very weak signals that will not open squelch even on the lowest setting.

Interesting. Here is a link to it. if you scroll through the photos you will see the mic close up. https://www.buytwowayradios.com/wouxun-kg-1000g-plus.html

    operator error

I have the KG-1000G Plus. Renaming that button must be one of the changes made to the new model.
  7. That roof rack may not be doing the 72G any favors. There are many things that can cause issues like that.

    operator error

    That reads: 6/Mode
  9. Man that was brazen! I have heard of pirate radio but this takes it to a new level.
  10. Good luck! Please let us know what they say.
  11. I'm just thinking of a college student and his ability to set up much of ham station. Would depend on his living situation I guess. I'm sure he could handle more studying for another test LOL!
  12. Fortunately for me the rural area I live in is still analog for most everything including Sheriff ,EMS and fire which is mainly what I am interested in. I get by just fine with a Uniden BC125AT hand held. I have three of them. Cost $130. I think was what I paid.
  13. There are of course Sat phones and they do work well however you are still relying on someone else's network. I asked my sat phone provider what would happen if they were unable to function if SHTF and they said the phone would work for 60 days after last payment was made. So even that is limited in a longer term outage. Still may be the best option however as they are easy to operate. Just need a clear view of the sky so anyone can operate them without much technical ability.
  14. That's ebay for ya, people will sell current production items for way more than they cost new. I see it all the time. There must be enough people that fall for that or they wouldn't do it so much. Ya most of the prices I saw were in the 300-400 range.
  15. Hello and welcome! I have read through your post a few times and thinking about what you describe it does sound like the radio may have a problem. The KG-XS20G is the mobile version of the KG-935. I have the KG-1000G plus as my base and the KG-935G Plus's for mobile's with 5db gain roof antennas and get excellent range in our rural area. 5-10 miles is no problem have reached 30 miles without much trouble. Wouxun makes good radios. I would call "Buy Two Way Radios" and talk to them about it before sending it back. They actually helped design these for the American market. Maybe someone else will chime in with an idea? Good luck.
  16. Hello and welcome! The problem is that in a grid down type of situation repeaters can be down as well because most are powered from the grid, although some have back up batteries or generators maybe solar even. So they can not be relied on for emergency communications planning. VHF and UHF (GMRS is UHF) are basically line of sight communications. If the two antennas can see each other then they can talk. If you can both get enough altitude as in hill top to hill top you may get 100 miles or more. 250 miles? Not likely. For that distance you will need to look to the ham radio world. There is a lot to learn about radio comms for it to be effective in emergencies or just to be competent with it in general. Look for better quality radios for emergency use. They need to be reliable.
  17. LOL I bet you would. I just looked again found one on ebay for $900.
  18. The Alinco looks like a great radio, just read a couple of reviews. However I could not find it in stock anywhere with a casual search. Discontinued?
  19. GMRS radios are only allowed to transmit on GMRS frequencies/channels 462/467 Mhz. All other bands covered are receive only. 70cm and 2m refer to the wavelength of the band. Very High Frequency VHF is 2 meters long and Ultra High Frequency UHF is 70 cm long for one full wave. The higher the frequency the shorter the wave length. Antenna's are made to transmit within the advertised band but can usually receive a much wider range than they can transmit on.
  20. Heck it will likely be able to replace these forums, as in all of us.
  21. Don't get too excited Steve, A.I. will soon replace most such jobs. It's already replacing Randy.
  22. Maybe not but at least Alinco is testing the waters. If it sells well they will likely add more models as time goes on. Wouxun needs some competition in the GMRS market.
  23. Yes welcome Mike! Thank you for your service!
  24. Looks like a good competitor for the KG-805G and KG-905G. Looking forward to your report wrci350.
