  1. @Lscott Loved that show.
  2. Not everyone will be in the worst part of an EMP. I think it's worth doing what we can to protect some communications devices.
  3. UV-5R "GMRS" with an old Radio Shack scanner antenna I had in the garage from way back. Home made adapter. Yes, I can actually talk to people with this thing.
  4. @Sshannon Just when I think I'm joking. LOL! New technology never ceases to amaze me.
  5. Kenwood has released a new "Conceal Cary" radio. It's a little hard to hit the buttons and it doesn't have good range but it has USB charge and it fits nicely in a pocket.
  6. @Sshannon Very well said. You should expand that slightly and put it into a PDF. Is there an FAQ area on this forum?
  7. I agree, when you can afford the better items. Some of us can barely afford a UV-5R or an MP31. We do the best we can.
  8. @WRWW910 I don't own one of those radios but if you are looking for something simple, it looks like it will do the job. If you are like some of us and want to program in every repeater known to man, it might get a little frustrating. The description says "30 GMRS channels (repeater capable), 219 programmable scanner channels (RX only)" A problem I have noticed is that even when a radio offers 200+ channels, only 8 can be programmed to transmit on repeaters, the rest can only receive. It doesn't make sense to me to have all those channels and not be able to transmit on them even when they are programmed with GMRS frequencies. Just something to be aware of. P.S. I have a UV-5R "GMRS" version and I can transmit on ALL 127 channels as long as they are programmed with GMRS frequencies.
  9. I'm no guru either but I recognize the value of real-world examples.
  10. I think Chirp has such a steep learning curve because they cover so many different manufacturers. Their online documentation really helps me.
  11. A unique key would prevent inserting a row with the same node number.
  12. 1) Right click on location A and select Measure Distance. 2) Pan over and left click on location B. It's a little different on the phone.
  13. @WRQC527 Is that the Mystery Machine?
  14. Yes, it is BNC.
  15. @Lscott Thanks for the docs. @Sshannon Mine is a little older than that.
  16. I was given a Kenwood TH-75A yesterday. No battery, charger, or antenna. Could use some help finding a good place to get these items. Thanks.
  17. @Sshannon, @FreqieRadio Sorry for the brain fart. I should have put that together.
  18. No, I'm saying that you should not be completely without GPS if you have a modern phone.
  19. Not sure about mobile radios and GPS but even without service the GPS on your phone should still work.
  20. @WRQC626 Thanks, that is exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for.
  21. @back4more70 thanks for the input. I'm on a very tight budget. Would you say that the UV-17R transmits and receives as well as the UV5R? Thanks.
  22. Just wondering if anyone has this radio and what you think about it. Saw this yesterday and it looks like a nice radio. Large screen, easy to read buttons, hearing aid, all the things that are important to old guys like me.
  23. I have a couple of MP31 that have this type of charge. Haven't found any drawbacks yet.
  24. Welcome! Rule #1: Have fun and don't get too hung up on the small stuff.
  25. @txrodehog thanks for showing a side-by-side comparison. I got my UV-5R and the letters on the number keys are really hard to read. It looks like the ones on the UV-9G are much easier to read. I've been thinking that my next radio might be a 9G and that photo puts me that much closer in the direction of the 9G. P.S. I will click like on your post as soon as the system will let me. Too many reactions in the current 24hr period.
