  1. I'm aware that. Just trying to get answers....not concerned about the way quotes appear. Thanks though.
  2. Yeah, terminology matters. I've just never heard folks calling their shack or radio room set up as a control station, only base stations..... learning something new every day. Regardless. Yes, my radio can either hear someone on a simplex channel and I can talk to them, if they're close enough.....that's what you're calling a base station. Or I can scan the repeater channels and break squelch on a distant repeater and have a conversation...that's what you're calling a control station. Interesting
  3. "you could just put in a larger and higher power repeater using the existing antenna & line that you've already got in place, and then plug a mic into the repeater so you could use it as a dispatch point." Interesting. So a dispatch point and a base station the same thing? I was told about three months ago that I can not use a repeater station as a base station.....idk. shm. Thanks WRXU693
  4. I guess my biggest question is "why?" Maybe I was a little too vague. I'm very happy with my base setup. I can hit repeaters from 50+ miles away. But my county is repeater poor and I want to promote gmrs here. So that's why I'm asking about a potential repeater and existing base antenna working together or not. Thanks WRXU693
  5. This radio jargon throws me again. Explain what lag means.
  6. I guess the GMRS version I bought...isn't legit.
  7. I currently have a 40' antenna for my base unit. My base radio is 50w (44.8 to be expect). If I put another antenna up at the same location and height for one of those small self-contend brief case repeater at what.....5w? Will they work together as far as me wanting to TX on the base and the repeater being on the same channel? Or will the base overload the small repeater? Thanks WRXU693 James
  8. Thank you Ray! I'll be printing out your explanation(s) and putting in my filing cabinet. That way I can go back and reread.
  9. "I set them to encode (transmit)".... "extra 30 seconds it would have taken them to program their repeater to encode a tone on the output" Hey Ray, I'm confused. "Encode" is TX on the radio. How is encode (TX) could a repeater be the same? Nothing gets heard if the radio and repeater is TX (encode) at the same time. My head hurts.
  10. I appreciate your patience.
  11. Thank you. Radio jargon is something I'm learning....appreciate it. So, if someone needs help on the interstate or county backroad has no cell signal and access to a gmrs radio. They can call out for help but they would have to use the repeater channels with the travel tone in the correct position on their radio?
  12. Thank you. I understand what squelch is. So a setting of "0" is open or close squelch?
  13. "but your squelch will not open up" Thank you Sir. But what does that mean....I can't talk to the person? And really sir....I'm not trying to hardheaded. Radio jargon throws us new guys.
  14. If I'm traveling across the state or across the country and want to listen out for gmrs folks. Where do I put the travel tone (141.3) in my radio? In TX or RX and what channels? GMRS 15-22 or RPT 15-22? or both? Just don't understand where the travel tone comes into effect.... idk. SMH
  15. It's listed..UV-5R but it says 'Radio identifies as Radioddity UV-5G. Please choose the proper vendor/model and try again".
  16. I didn't know that. Thanks. But I have a UV-5R (GMRS). Apparently, that doesn't make any difference. What software do you recommend?
  17. I thought it was "not even close" but it was....it accepted UV-5G.
  18. I installed CHIRP next...I assume the latest and greatest. Got a BTECH programming cable to use for my Baofeng UV-5R (GMRS version). The software would not recognize the radio as a Baofeng.....it says it was a Radioditty (sp?) radio. wth? Then under that I had a pick a model that would finally communicate that's nowhere near model UV-5R. What gives? Thanks
  19. Got it. But my situation, the gmrs bug is not taken ahold yet in my county. Therefore, I have no choice but to be that guy "some people" and reach out to other counties (known repeaters) just to see if my radio is working correctly and then talk about the weather.
  20. That's cool. I like that intent too. So I assume you only use (scan) gmrs simplex channels then?
  21. Ok. So that's what I'm asking. If you're reaching out 100 miles (guessing).... then why use gmrs?
  22. Point taken. Now I see where you're coming from.
  23. I respect your POV and what the FCCs intended but who wouldn't like to see how far they can reach? Just asking.
