Ahh, ok and it makes sense. One of those things like the old Jap Datsuns sold in the US were really Nissan and they eventually went back to their real nomenclature.
-
The Pofung name was a while back as I recall. It was a temporary renaming for some reason, but it never held. One of the UV-5Rs I got a long long time back said Baofeng, but the battery said Pofung while this was happening.

My Assault Radio - Beofeng AR-5RM - has that feature but like was said, why? And the manual only tells you how to turn it on or off... Im afraid to test it, as if there happens to be a default password, the manual says nothing about, oops! EDIT I really want to test it though, have it locked and I am curious if you can still pull a download/upload from CHIRP.
-
Would you not have to get past the password before you could choose menu 40?
-
BTW, make sure you have your Roger beep on... the LADIES love a man with a Roger beep radio.

Then the fun part. Over time, some of the tones will get changed for various reasons, some repeaters will die, some new ones will crop up. SIGH Then you have to edit them and upload...

I do not own a GMRS specific radio, but I am pretty sure from what I know and what has been said and is the case, the basic simplex GMRS channels 1 - 14 and the 8 repeater freqs are hard coded somewhere in its programming. So, you have saved and locked a downloaded file of your radio to restore yet? Do it, then lock that file, tinker with it and see, save it as a different working file. All else goes pear shaped, you can restore at least.

And i just noticed in my example file pulling up my code plug for my mobile radio, for memory 166, I misspelled Knob as Lnob. Great, I need to buy a laptop. Its a pain to pull my mobile out and bring it in to reprogram from my desktop... I could do it by hand, but im too old and need readers glasses, F that

Yay!

Scroll to " - > Tone" and select that. Then it will ask for the tone, and find the right one.
-
Its going to be cross, but its thinking for you as in, OK, you selected cross, got it - so now we need to set the mode for the cross you selected.
-
Just simplified what was needed, and i tried to convey... 8-)
-
It seems more confusing than it is.... you will get it, we all had to get it.. Location 166 is what it should look like. Hit the options for tone mode, set to cross, it asks for the Mode, use the ->tone, then when you select that it needs the tone. Go left to right with the settings.
-
With the TSQL your sending tones up - now, since the repeater does not require them, it will ignore them, and still repeat.
-
you want the next in my list, the " - > Tone "

Some basics, most if not all GMRS repeaters have the + 5.000000 offset. You to the repeater would add that 5.0 to your outgoing freq, that way when its repeating it on 462.650, its not stepping on whats coming in.
-
Although for instance, if the local area had say, lots of interference or simplex on 462.65, tuning out the stuff as best as you can with the output tone in is a good idea if you just want repeater traffic. So to set it exact, Tone Mode should be cross, Tone Squelch should be 136.5, Cross Mode should be ->Tone, duplex +, and Offset 5.000000

One of the things that was an issue with the UV-5R, and this probably is not new info but might have a reason they do not pick up as well, was the factory squelch settings were terrible. So might be a Duh! we knew that, but I toss it out as well. I set mine and they work well for me with a spread up to around 60, with level 1 being one. I can run mine on that setting 90 percent of the time with good reception and no problems.
-
Mine have all came VIA my registered E-mail. Check you junk mail folder in case.

I would look up by search online for local radio clubs for your area. That would be the greatest support locally to learn. If you were on the Tiger Mtn. (Oly-3...) repeater, there was a CERES net at that time.
-
If your not being a douchebag, i would not sweat it licensed or not. Im guessing by the VK2ZB that is an Australian call sign by your regulatory agency. Just use that. (this is not legal advice, just advice on the reality of how many ***** you would get from the FCC in reality)

Heres a good start: https://www.miklor.com/COM/Review_UV17proGPS.php Specifically, this part: GPS Capability The UV-17 Pro GPS supports both GPS and BDS modes. The coordinates and elevation measurements are exact as expected. This includes location sharing between two UV17 Pro GPS radios. The UV17 Pro GPS also has the ability to send GPS coordinates between two radios. Verify GPS capability To verify that your radio has GPS, Menu 4 should display GNSS to select the GPS options. When GPS is turned ON, a long press of the Blue key in the upper right of the keypad will display the GPS screen.
