I used a UV-5R a while ago and it broke the forum for a bit from its Spurious Nocturnal Emissions.... Glad it made it back.

GMRS Transitioning to Hobbyist-Type Service?
WRXR255 replied to intermod's topic in General Discussion
Back when I was young I was a Volunteer Fireman and EMT for our podunk town I grew up in. At the time the radios we used werent the best sounding things out there. We were pager equipped and our radio frequency was 39.500. They called that Low Band, and on the EMT side we were on High Band, 155.175 according to the Motorola rep. Had to carry 2 pagers, LOL Anyway, 10 codes were much needed and used for us, but when I got to GMRS, even though 10 codes were baked in for me from that time, i never had an urge or compulson to use it here. -
Vinegar and oil on it helps

I got through it and started up "Stripes" - halfway through through my intoxication level got to the "pull the plug" level and hit the hay. As i was drifting off however, It hit me in my moments of alcohol fueled introspection that a mashup of 1941, Red Dawn (the original, not the woke remake), and Stripes could work. The soundtracks alone, for the most part, are kinda like echoes too. I forgot how much I missed in 1941 watching it last night, subtle things in the background for instance... I noticed nuances and things I had missed before, and I think over the many years I have rewatched it on occasion, i pick up something new every time.

Its my movie night, so goodnight MyGMRS, im firing up the VCR for "1941". Classic. Got some good local brewed IPA beers, a good cigar or 3, and lets do this.

I tried to go that route, but the links on the FCC website kept taking me here: https://cl.gy/XWop

Do you know where i can source a fake FCC license? Haven't had to think about a fake ID since I turned 21, so its been a while. All my sources from way back then are in jail.

FRS/GMRS Frequencies and programming requirements
WRXR255 replied to WSDA306's question in Technical Discussion
Point, Set, Match. Summed it up perfectly. I dont think they try to do that, but its bureaucracy at its best so give em some slack. -
Yeah, you gotta do a dance of getting to the OP post, selecting by date, then navigate to the recent posts. To me its a solution that was looking for a problem to be added to newer forum front ends, but it is what it is.

FRS/GMRS Frequencies and programming requirements

I think you can only if your Premium. Us on Mid Grade or Regular are out. -
If it shows as open, just use it. Ask around on the repeater for permission if you ever find anyone on it. Worst thing that can happen is they ask you to stop.

Newbie question about GMRS repeater access requests
WRXR255 replied to WRVE426's topic in General Discussion
Are you listening on another radio? You dont hear yourself repeated, if thats what you mean. The tail is after you transmit, you might hear a bit of open silence after you let off the PTT, then the radio goes silent. -
In agreement mostly here. The downstream joe blow in most cases does their job well, but its the top management driving roughshod over what they are there for and mission creep is why we bash them, and call them out on it. Heck, Its in most Americans DNA to be distrustful and watchful over those GOV agencies as it should be. I mean, the Board of Education department has its own, internally ran and funded SWAT team... WTF? 3 AM no knock raid because Jhonny was tardy yesterday for school.

FRS/GMRS Frequencies and programming requirements
WRXR255 replied to WSDA306's question in Technical Discussion
15 - 22 are the GMRS starting point of the allocated repeater channels. They were allowed to be added to FRS simpex use after the original FRS channels 1 - 14. So its why it starts low to high again. -
At a minimum buying you a drink at least.

@amaff answered while i was typing but try this frist as he says, find the repeater here if it is here: Click request access. Otherwise ask on the repeater and go from there.

Updated FCC rule 95.1749 now includes “or other networks” Jan 2024
WRXR255 replied to cozy659's topic in FCC Rules Discussion
NEVER think the fact that UN-elected officials that have had a taste of power will give that up easily no matter what their "checks and balances" branch says will go belly up on that decision. They always double down and get more stupid. -
GMRS Transitioning to Hobbyist-Type Service?

My fault for my poor attempts at humor is usually alcohol related... what i thought funny, edgy, or in the worst case, "Everyone should get this" is not always as good in the end. FWIW, I accept my call out when needed, and have no grudge or animosity for them at all. Were all ok 8-) -
It is more of a courtesy gesture than anything. Like asking a neighbor to borrow a lawnmower. Repeaters are oftentimes privately owned or owned by a club, so in some cases a repeater is put up by someone for family/friends/business use and for them and clubs, its good to know the metrics on how many users they have.

Interesting. What is the make/model of the programming cable?
-
CHIRP supports the TK-880, (it is still an experimental driver for that model, TBF) its free and windows compatible. Have you tried that?
-
I was being over the top for humor with that part. my main point was what is the best reach out and touch someone if there is a dire strait. I missed that attempt apparently.

I know of a few brands of Emergency locator beacons, namely the Zoleo and the Garmin InReach 2 I know the Queen of GMRS has the Garmin, and I have a Zoleo. Is there any preference to those more knowledgeable about both systems that makes one better than the other? I know better than to think a GMRS radio and or HAM radio is going to do squat if I and or others outdoors in an emergency situation need communication… and have that option only. I got the belt clip AND wrist strap on my boofwang, it should work, after-all, right? I do not think the radio is going to help much at first when a riot breaks out at my 8 year old daughters soccer game, i need serious emergency coms. Thoughts?

As long as you have your FCC approved Belt Clip, and are wearing it on your belt, you are OK. As close as you want on the panties, but beware the palm slap of doom from the wearer if they dont like it. My stubby antenna works perfectly fine, at least, thats what she tells me.
