WSDD519's Achievements

  1. All of our repeaters are Kenwood units. TKR750 and TKR850. No problems at all.
  2. Welcome from another Alabamian (Covington County, AL)!
  3. I'm sorry, I don't. I've tried them in the past on different radios (ham) and most were so-so in quality of transmit audio. Receive audio, on the other hand, was mostly fine. The one my friend had was from Tidradio. The Icom ID51A I bought from a ham friend has one...but I don't use it. The commercial stuff (Kenwood, etc.) is much better.
  4. A friend had one on his H8. I was talking to him and he sounded a bit "muffled" so I had him unplug it and use the built-in mic. It sounded so much better..much clearer and easier to understand. He tossed in the round file.
  5. I was sitting at the computer last night when I thought I heard someone calling football plays on the scanner. I turned it up and listened again and sure enough, I heard someone calling plays. This was on GMRS/FRS channel 5. I live not far from the town stadium and school has started back recently. Apparently, the high school football team was practicing and one of the coaches was calling plays down to the sidelines from the pressbox. I don't remember the exact names of the plays...but they're interesting. Other than that, I hear a couple of kids every now and then playing with their radios....holding down the call button, of course.
  6. As others have already said, absolutely she can. There's a guy that lives in my town (in AL) that uses his son's GMRS license. The son is in the midwest. He doesn't come up on the repeater much...but he jumps in from time to time.
  7. Amateur operator with a GMRS license and also a police dispatcher. I have no problem keeping the lingo separate. Ten codes are common for my agency but I do not use them anywhere else. I do hear them on ham and GMRS from a few people around here though...mostly new licensees. Most of the GMRS folk here also have ham licenses.
  8. To add to that...the H8 is 10 watts ONLY on VHF.
  9. I haven't played with CB in many, many years. I went by "Cobra" back in the 80s. We had quite a large group of locals on the radio around my area. By the way, what's with the 3 digit numbers?
  10. Have two of the TIDRadio TD-H8s in "alien green" along with an Icom ID5100 (used for a base station). HTs get most of the use as repeater has solid coverage in my area.
  11. Glad you got it sorted out. I really like the IDO4. Easy to set up and use. I'm running a IDO4 w/voice capability on a Kenwood TKR750 being used as one of my club's amateur repeaters. We also have a Kenwood TKR850 being used as a GMRS repeater and I plan on putting an IDO4 w/voice on it as well. We just put the GMRS repeater up a few days ago. It has a 25-30 mile range. It has not been made public yet as we're still in the testing phase to make sure all is good. There's not much GMRS traffic around here except for my group.
  12. I have been around radio all my life. My Dad was a radio jock (DJ) in the mid/late 1960s, I was a radio jock for 20+ yrs (started while in high school) and my Stepfather was big into CB and a ham. It only grew from there. Got my Tech license in 1999, my General in 2008 and my Extra in 2009. A ham friend who also has his GMRS license started talking it up recently. After I did some research, I decided I'd get mine too. So, here I am. WSDD519. I thought it would be a great way to get my wife and maybe a few other family members into radio. I'll take the grandsons riding around town on the golf cart and will take a radio so my wife can get up with me. It gets her on the radio. I think she likes it...although she'd never admit it . I picked up a pair of TidRadio TD-H8s recently. Also, several members of my radio group got their GMRS licenses and since we have all the necessary equipment, we will be putting a repeater up as there's not one in our area. By the way, I do radio every day in my job as the Dispatch Supervisor at my local PD.
  13. Good one! I wonder if the woman he's talking to took the protection order out on him? As a police dispatcher, I see that kind of stuff from time to time. Woman takes out a PFA (protection from abuse order) against "her man" and then continues contact with him by letting him visit.
