  1. Dork is a definite insult with it being another word for a portion of the male body below the waist and above the knees as well as a term used to describe people as stupid, foolish or inept. Geek is a term of endearment.
  2. Fair. You did try. Lesson learned!
  3. This thing, all because of RANDY, is getting pushed further and further back for shipping dates. I should have ordered when I was going to but of course I didn't.... I should have listened to the warning to order NOW but of course I didn't...
  4. You can easily restore the programming. Backup the programming with CHIRP Flash radio to NORMAL Read the radio AGAIN (this is per CHIRP) so CHIRP has the layout of the memory Re-upload your saved config via CHIRP back to the radio These were the steps I followed and it worked flawlessly for me. I have done this going from GMRS to ham to NORMAL modes and back. It has worked each time.
  5. It's not a bad radio. You can unlock it or even put a VERY much more unlocked firmware on it (which I have) and it does what you mostly expect. For the price and features, it's a great little radio. Definitely not the best of the best, just ask the Queen about that and you will get a good radio, but it can and will get you started with a small and very lightweight unit that can get you some fars... as they say.

Your second link is the one I use most in calculating because I love how they do the inclusion of the adjustment factor for real-world application.

To give you an idea... My homebrew antenna for GMRS has a total dipole length of 11.6 inches using two 5.8 inch legs. If you can modify what you have or load it the way WRKW566 suggests, you would probably just burn out radios using it.
  8. No need for defense. Was basically just agreeing with Mr Shannon.
  9. Premium beats seeing ads any day of the year.
  10. Most people who work with HIPAA understand there is only one letter P in it. That is why I mentioned my being a billing and coder with extensive "hammered in" training about and surrounding the policy. But HIPAA deals with transmitting health record in the clear for anyone to be able to see or even your doctor shouting your conditions or prognoses aloud while complete strangers or even family are around. You never hear this type of information over PD/FD/EMS channels. At all.
  11. Yeah. I suspect this will change in the coming months as the agitprops begin to crawl out from under their rocks to disrupt society, cause $30 billion in damages to individuals and businesses alike while everyone claims it is mostly peaceful protesting.
  12. The average person does not have a police scanner. Of the "average" types who do, most do not have the $600+ it takes to get into decoding P25-II or working with trunking systems. The SDS100 performs very well in this case. But to be honest, I hear local PD all the time. They never give out personally identifying information (which negates the HIPAA compliance needs) over the air. They are vague with the exception of condition of 911 callers and their needs. No names. No phone numbers (unless public numbers). No healthcare records transmitted. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (I am very familiar with it having been a trained billing and coder) doesn't truly apply here.
  13. I have heard nothing on 70cm or 2m and GMRS has been quiet as well so far as the subject here goes. I also have a Uniden SDS100 and while police activity of all kinds picked up yesterday during the voting process, it was mostly crowd control related with some towing of vehicles, but nothing serious at all. Even right now (11:30A EST) the scanner is pretty quiet.
  14. hehehe.... that will happen. Just cut in with the whole "Break channel" until someone responds.
  15. I think routing cable was easier in older cars. Pull up the floor trim and run it along under there and into the trunk to my Wilson 1000 since I was not a K40 fan. I am sure you will figure out something crafty.
  16. Agreed. I say have a lot of fun with it. Lots of stuff you can do with CB. I do not recommend getting a heater, though. That was probably bad on my part even though my radios were all verifiably clean on tx!
  17. The FM side was never very popular around here, either.
  18. I spent 20+ years on CB, hehe. I kind of miss it. The only thing I do not miss is cab drivers and truckers with dirty radios talking between frequencies on sideband and splashing everything 6 channels up and down the dial. I used to get in my car and fox hunt them. Then I would sit close by and key up with a 500W linear. They used to get quiet after that for some reason. I do miss the skip on CB (dx) as well. Farthest I have ever contacted someone on CB was Australia during the summer of 1996. Sat in my driveway on the mobile rig for that one. It was tough because EVERYONE was trying to contact this guy... but I lived on a hill overlooking Boston Harbor, heh. My base antenna was also almost 130 feet above sea level and it could see everything around it. Used to talk straight to Concord, NH from that base on stock wattage with my Cobra 142 GTL on the daily. I had 2 mobile units: Cobra 29 LTD and the President HR2510 with the chipswitch... but that wasn't truly a CB radio, per se. Heh. Good times... good times... I wish you people would stop making me buy radios.
  19. Review TIDRADIO TD-H3 - Miklor Features to cost makes it a great radio. It performs well in all of my uses. The first set I had couldn't open repeaters, but the replacement do and continue to do so. It is small, light weight and even sounds decent. My set even tested clean on a harmonics test using my TinySA Ultra, though the wattage is a bit under by almost a full watt compared to published specs. Very inexpensive and they work well.
  20. H3 is a fantastic little radio. But that damn Queen made me order a RockyTalkie 5W radio... dammit. To the OP: Screw anyone telling you the radios aren't good enough and as others said, tell them it is an icom or a kenwood or a yaesu. They can't tell.
  21. As it should be. Government has no business being in your business.
  22. I made my own. It is compact, portable and I hang it outside my doorway during the day. It transmits well and receives very well. It was about $10 in parts and an hour of time between build and fine tuning it. Using two AWG 8 copper wires at 5.8" in length each for a total of 11.6 inches, some solder, some RG-8X and an electrical tee box that is weather proof at IP67. I get between 1.1:1 - 1.3:1 SWR across the band with reflected power hitting at 0.05W at the highest. I used a NanoVNA to tune it. I have a ferrite choke on it near the feed for noise control. Big improvement over stick and rubber duck antennas that I own when using indoors, but that has a lot to do with it being outside. I live in a very low lying area that is prone to ponding during rainstorms as well as being surrounded by trees and buildings.
  23. Not confused. It seemed as though you were advocating for one or the other and almost saying that not everyone will want to take exams to get a license. I have no reason to tell you to shut up. This is a meaningless jibber jabber after all.
