  1. Review TIDRADIO TD-H3 - Miklor Features to cost makes it a great radio. It performs well in all of my uses. The first set I had couldn't open repeaters, but the replacement do and continue to do so. It is small, light weight and even sounds decent. My set even tested clean on a harmonics test using my TinySA Ultra, though the wattage is a bit under by almost a full watt compared to published specs. Very inexpensive and they work well.
  2. H3 is a fantastic little radio. But that damn Queen made me order a RockyTalkie 5W radio... dammit. To the OP: Screw anyone telling you the radios aren't good enough and as others said, tell them it is an icom or a kenwood or a yaesu. They can't tell.
  3. As it should be. Government has no business being in your business.
  4. I made my own. It is compact, portable and I hang it outside my doorway during the day. It transmits well and receives very well. It was about $10 in parts and an hour of time between build and fine tuning it. Using two AWG 8 copper wires at 5.8" in length each for a total of 11.6 inches, some solder, some RG-8X and an electrical tee box that is weather proof at IP67. I get between 1.1:1 - 1.3:1 SWR across the band with reflected power hitting at 0.05W at the highest. I used a NanoVNA to tune it. I have a ferrite choke on it near the feed for noise control. Big improvement over stick and rubber duck antennas that I own when using indoors, but that has a lot to do with it being outside. I live in a very low lying area that is prone to ponding during rainstorms as well as being surrounded by trees and buildings.
  5. Not confused. It seemed as though you were advocating for one or the other and almost saying that not everyone will want to take exams to get a license. I have no reason to tell you to shut up. This is a meaningless jibber jabber after all.
  6. But you can keep your GMRS license, which can be shared to family members, and you can be a ham at the same time. I know I do and I am.
  7. Welcome to the fray! I became a premium member to help support the work of maintaining this resource. Watch out for that Steve Shannon, though. He will teach you things.
  8. Thank you. This is good to know. I get your dislike of pistol stocks. I may have to go out and grab a set of these. They look "well enough," as they say.
  9. Someone could be using tones for a semi-private (because these are not privacy settings) conversation. Lock onto the channel and do a CTCSS/DCS tone scan and see if you can catch it.
  10. The USB cable is very convenient, eh? Wish my D878UV II Plus had the option. I bought the programming cable for my TD-H3s but never use it. No need.
  11. Are you running the latest version? There was an update pushed a couple days ago. Another thing to try is to download from the radio first and then upload your changes from your saved file after.
  12. You're a good and helpful operator, Steve!
  13. Thank you. I was looking at these for awhile and then stopped. I should just go try a pair on. I have the factory stock on my 870 still because it was comfortable enough when I put a better butt on it. I agree on the advantages of being able to use any HT you desire. I shoot ambidextrous as well so the option to switch sides would be sweet. The FRS side might be really nice for off-road groups and maybe even hunting parties during a a drive or something. I can see value in these in a bunch of scenarios. Kids would love them, too, I am sure. Keep them busy for hours at camp, heh. I guess I need to start looking into these again because I can't stand earplugs.
  14. Are they really comfortable shooting trap and sporting clays and hunting? I am an avid shotgun shooter. My most preferred firearm is my trusty Remington 870 which I use for everything shotgun, multiple barrels and extended tubes. Even have it setup for scope during turkey and deer seasons. The headset seems a little on the bulky side for this application, so hoping to be wrong here.
  15. Utah is nowhere near those lines, so it was pretty relevant. But the question was about East of Line C and North of Line A in this case and while you can operate West and all, that isn't relevant to the OP's query. But why WOULD a Utahan care unless they are traveling in which case they have no chance of violating that rule? They normally shouldn't unless special circumstances. It's always good to know the rules anyway and to get clarification if questions arise surrounding said rules (such as with the OP), but unless leaving Utah to go near Canalaska way, they can't physically violate the rule. To me, relevant. To you? I guess not.
  16. Hmm... that really is a head scratcher, eh? I will chalk it up to that magical and mythical "Government Efficiency" thing I always hear about.
  17. Considering Line A and East of Line C result in a geographic disparity, you ask a good and relevant question.
  18. Awesome. Good you got that sorted out. Welcome to the hobby and the forum!
  19. Awesome. Thank you very much for this feedback. I was looking at the Stick Pro and it's actually in the cart at HRO right now so I guess I will stick with it.
  20. Then it is clearly just not updated on the map/in the database. Maybe reach out to the repeater owner and see what's up?
  21. Which RigExpert model do you have? I am shopping them currently because I am having fun building antennas lately and I want the convenience factor.
  22. I used to paint professionally for about 12 years... the most stable extensions I've ever used were Wooster Sherlock GT poles. I swear you could do domestic demolition with them or even defend yourself from velociraptors if it came to it. But I like the setup. Nice.
  23. I have one repeater using no tones near me that is not listed here on the site. I found it on my SDS100 one day. All kinds of mess going on there so I never use it.
  24. The tone scan will only give you the downlink tone, not the uplink. Key up on the repeater, does it squelch back to you?
  25. The point is that it may have changed...
