How close are the radios to each other when you are testing?

New to GMRS world looking for advise buying first radio
OffRoaderX replied to WSCC962's topic in General Discussion
This is the correct answer.. and for clarification, because you are new, "Part 95 certified" means that it says "GMRS" on the box. .Any radio/box/advertisement that says "GMRS" on it is Part 95 certified, meaning it is a true "GMRS Radio".. if it does not say "GMRS", then it is a business radio, a H.A.M.s radios, or lord knows what else, and will be more complicated to use and may not transmit on GMRS frequencies. -
New to GMRS world looking for advise buying first radio
OffRoaderX replied to WSCC962's topic in General Discussion
He lied to you. He lied, right to your face.. That is not a GMRS radio and it is the LAST thing anyone with a brain would recommend to someone "new to GMRS" and looking for a GMRS radio. You should never listen to anything that idiot ever tells you again. -
Retevis RT97L portable repeater -- first impressions
OffRoaderX replied to WRTC928's topic in Equipment Reviews
As a very wise-man says in my videos all the time: You snooze, you miss out. -
This is not an issue. All GMRS radios/brands manufactured after 2017 can communicate with all other GMRS radios/brands, and most manufactured before 2017 can also. There may be isolated incidents of one radio not talking to another radio, but those are.. isolated...

Retrevis FRS 22 not talking to other brands
OffRoaderX replied to MJR346's topic in Family Radio Service (FRS)
The bandwidth setting has nothing to do with your issue. Either there are tones on the radio that cannot 'hear', or the two radios are too close to each other when transmitting. -
I like either the AR-5RM or the XTS5000, depending on how many monies you want to blow and how strongly your radio-dork gene is presenting.
-
That's not 'feedback', its noise, or engine noise.. or, ignition noise.. Feedback is a whole 'nuther thing. what kind of car is it, does it have any LED lights, and how is the radio wired for power?
-
Yes - All the newly manufactured ones destined for the U.S. are locked and cannot be unlocked.
-
What if the UV-5R is locked also?
-
1) NO 2) You would be able to transmit on non-GMRS frequencies but still have the convenience of having the pre-programmed simplex and repeater channels.
-
No. As long as you do it right/dont screw it up, you lose nothing.. The SWR is a good indicator to let you know there are no shorts in your coax/connectors and the antenna is not way out of tune - but yes there is more: Does it actually work?.. and the answer is probably yes... You are already WAY over-thinking all of this. Just install everything, double-check with your SWR meter, then go enjoy your radios.

less than 10 paragraphs and no big technical-sounding words, so you did good! -
Retevis RT97L portable repeater -- first impressions
OffRoaderX replied to WRTC928's topic in Equipment Reviews
Because reasons... That's why its always best to measure with a dummy-load.. A radio-dork will come along momentarily to write a 10-paragraph explanation that makes them look really smart, but basically says the same thing. -
This is correct.. The antenna on both my Jeeps is mounted on the rear tailgate where all of the "experts" have decreed it "will not work!!!1" because the lack of a perfect ground plane.. It is true the antennas would likely perform better with a good ground plane but both antennas have an SWR of around 2, and I regularly talk with people dozens of miles away, and was able to hit a repeater 93 miles away.

What would generate a Morse code ident on channel 6?
OffRoaderX replied to WSCB609's question in Technical Discussion
When a radio-dork says "CW", 99.9999999999999998% of the time, he is talking about, referring to, or eluding to Morse-Code... Do you even have a license bro? -
If they understand how radios work and want a handheld, then this is probably true.. You can get 10X - 100x or more farz with an FRS radio than you can with an FM CB handheld with the same-size antenna..
-
That ^ is the correct answer.

They will learn the value of using radios after the tracking-data from their phones are used during their trails to prove they were at the scene of their crime.

Base Station 50w recommendations with USB-C charge
OffRoaderX replied to bkmorse's topic in General Discussion
A friend of mine tried using his KG-1000G plugged into the lighter-hole in his car and the plug melted and caught on fire.. Not sure why a fuse didnt blow first... Melted plastic napalm got on his had and gave him a severe burn when he yanked-it out in a panic, but the radio was fine... -
Probably not.. is it still under warranty?

I met her in 1971 and she gave me a dehydrated lizard. (yes, seriously.. they were selling trinkets like dried snakes, lizards, scorpions, etc..)

For the last 8 years we have lead 1 or 2 groups per year (20-40 Jeeps each group), up Goler Gulch, through Mormon Flat, up to Schmit Tunnel, over to Holland Camp, the Cleanser Mines, then out Last Chance Canyon. For this year's event I am thinking about getting an Air Raid Siren..
-
You are correct sir.. We try to get up to Garlock/Last Chance Canyon 1 or 2 times a year but we've only been in that area you specified once, 7 or 8 years ago, after checking out The Pinnacles.

You spelled SUPERStar wrong..
