  1. Don't worry, all the spurious emissions from the CCR will simulate that SSB effect lol G.
  2. Wireless programming is already available on the APX/XPR/SL radios, via Bluetooth and/or via WiFi... G.
  3. Yep, they (M$$) were so laser focused on the PC market that it would seem they could't think "outside the box"... Apple learnt a lot from their almost demise... and Google pretty much figured out that it was information what really mattered, regardless of the platform/hardware/software... I was never a big fan of Apple, but as of lately it seems like they are way better than Google at giving your personal information away... as in: you privacy seems to be valued more at/by Apple than on the "Spy me harder, daddy Google" phones... @OffRoaderX C'mon!! we are having a good conversation that doesn't involve trashing CCRs, for once!! G.
  4. ...Or fear what they've worked on for a very long time... what it has become... and what lies ahead... G.
  5. So true... but looking in retrospect now it feels as if paths diverged quickly tho... especially in a PC market dominated by MS-DOS... I think the ability to "upgrade" and the large swath of videogames available were, IMO, what really made the PC thrive during the early stages over the more polished Macintosh, to the point Apple almost went extinct... G.
  6. Absolutely, Win8 was a debacle of its own proportions.... but I can't stand Win10 either. In fact, nothing that came after Win7 is worth using IMO, certainly not with the insane EULA you are forced to sign when you start using it, pretty much consenting to M$$ owning everything in your Machine, etc, spying on you, listening to what you say... etc... so... no... thank.... you. Looks like I'll be holding out in Win7 for the foreseable future... and then probably more... XP is still perfectly usable, but for my application the 3.2 GB memory limitation is what prevented me from using it today. so I went Win7 b/c of the 64-bit... and b/c it was almost like XP without the Vista cruft... If I could chose what OS to use today, I would go with Win2k, I think it was the fastest, most productive and most stable OS M$$ ever developed... XP added a lot of cruft on top of Win2k... G.
  7. Interesting, maybe some internal stuff that is causing the desense? In any case, glad you guys figured it out... nothing like good Motorolian gear G.
  8. @PACNWComms Nice setup!! Motorolian CDM radios... not bad!!
  9. S24 looks like a pretty decent radio. It has direct conversion Rodinia chip on it AFAIK. I'll spew more Motorola propaganda here... but if the SL7550 could be made to do FM, then that would've been, IMO, the best FRS radio. Wish Motorola would've actually done something with the potential that radio had... oh well... G.
  10. True, but remember that all opinions are valid, regardless of the level of experience. Why? because somebody's experience might not translate to your situation, so the opinion will not result in a favorable outcome for your situation. Fair point. I am sorry if I came too strong. G.
  11. And what would my opinion be? So, to clarify my opinion, b/c Michael seems to be putting words in my mouth that are not true: A Baofeng, or any cheap CCR its perfectly fine as your first radio, maybe even your second radio. That is my opinion. However, if you like the hobby, then anything after that the money should be better spent in a quality gear. And personally, I would just cut to the chase and go straight to Motorola, why? B/c my range problems ended when I switched to Motorola... how ironic... the one brand that hams seem to despise the most... turned out to be the brand of radios that reaches the furthest... but hams openly suggested buying more CCR garbage bags... I guess you can't argue with cheap. Buying CCRs is just adding a lot of unneeded frustrations, especially if you are trying to setup your own repeater, and a waste of money in the long run... b/c just like me, you'll end up with ... Motorola. Also, experience is just like an opinion... G.
  12. I was referring to Windows 10... I love XP... Vista was a blunder of its time. but compared to Win10... its a success... nothing comes close to how much the management idiots at M$$ destroyed a perfectly good workflow, that worked great for nearly 30 years... Win7 is the end of the line for me. I still run XP on a lot of my older machines. G.
  13. You mean, why bother wasting your time with a garbage bag POS O.S. that not only looks horrible and confusing as heck, but also has the worst EULA ever written....? I am still living the dream in Win7 here... carry on!! G.
  14. @MichaelLAX Still using WinXP? @OP Personally, I would get a used Vertex Standard/Motorola EVX-S24 for FRS. Its 2W on FM (also capable of DMR if you ever want to go that route), so its max power would be legal. And then, like its been already stated, I would pick a decent scanner for everything else... Dual band, tri band, quad band CCRs are just that, all garbage CCR; and radio range will suck in FRS due to limited power and piss poor receivers... G.
  15. LOL... yeah, Chicago is cold as heck too... I had a good run in FL (Orlando) for a while... from the Wisconsin Frozen Tundra I miss being outside during the winter... but then, I also remember that I don't miss melting down during the FL summers either... so... CA has a nicer weather, certainly, but with all the tax pillaging and plundering, among other things I won't utter here... it seems like that perfect place to live keeps eluding me, one way or another... ah... yes... the bachelor life was fun while it lasted... a long time ago... G.
  16. That's right, Wisconsin... where its cold as heck during the winter... So, I'd take former wife implies you got a new one... so, is the newer one more reLAXed? G.
  17. @WyoJoe Text is such a poor form of communication... takes away so much of the fun of speaking... @MichaelLAX Drugs? perhaps drinking problems? or too much LAXative? G.
  18. I think I prefer BetaMAX propagation... but that's just me...
  19. Changing subject?... what does the radio being "gateway drug" have to do with my original post, where I stated a fact, not an opinion, that it took the UV-5R short a decade to fix the spurious emissions problem, or is than an opinion? how is that?.... maybe you took offense in the word cheap? projecting? can't argue with cheap... I still own a vast CCRs collection myself, probably a lot larger than yours (uh oh... measurement context.... love those!!) .... also... I did get interested in radios again thanks to a UV5R knockoff... something that I've also stated time and time again, but you seem to ignore as well. Any reason for that? The problem is that people are being mislead and encouraged into buying these pieces of garbage radios as their 2nd, 3rd, ... etc... 40th radio... thinking that a more expensive CCR will be better, thus perpetuating the sale of garbage radios. And coming back to the UV-5R, just because the UV5R doesn't spew harmonics all over the band anymore it doesn't make the radio any better, in fact, it just makes it legal trash now... whereas before it was technically illegal trash.... b/c it would've failed the "Part 15 shall not cause harmful interference, etc"... but hey, its a "gateway drug" Lastly, regardless of whatever "reading your previous post" might mean to you, and just like axorlov said, YOU were the one who posted the picture in the first place... did you not? G.
  20. My thoughts are clear, CCR = garbage bag... and I will not miss the opportunity to say it... maybe repeating it 1000 times sticks and people stop buying them... that's the hope... So, with that said, I don't think anyone in this forum who has been around for the past few months is unclear about those thoughts ... but now, the J6 picture.... that might have other connotations that perhaps you might want to enlighten us with? political statement.... maybe?
  21. aside from the piss poor garbage bag UV-5R, is there any other purpose for the picture you might want to share with us? Michael?
  22. Motorola 220 is probably the best bet at this point, like an HT1250, etc... not sure exactly what radios will do 1.25m... G.
  23. @wayoverthere LOL... been tempted... I was tempted... sadly, and still own (I am still stuck with) multiple Anytone POS radios that nobody wants to purchase for anything that will mean a huge loss, ... an AT-578 and x3 Alinco MD-5 (AT-878 clones) .... all garbage, compared to the XPR7550e and XPR7550e.... Yep, Vertex Standard radios are pretty darn nice radios... anything commercial grade or LEO grade is going to offer great range in situations where a ham repeater is not handy to make a CCR turd reach more than 1/4 mile... @Lscott Totally, the XG-100p seems like a very nice radio, however, aside from the much higher price tag.. I think there is a lack of components and cheap replacement parts for it... also I've been told the radio is not very robust... certainly
