  1. I had something similar to that on my murs HT's. I ended up finding the source was my power tool battery chargers. I took a handheld shortwave radio and went around the house waving the antenna around various electronics until I heard strong static. Relocating them to another area fixed my problems
  2. Thats why most people mount them under the dash or on the roof between the visors. Also you don't want a 2 to 3 lb radio flying at your passengers face at 200mph in an accident when the air bag deploys so make sure it is not on one of the air bag panels

    New License

It can take a day or two for the system to sync. Welcome to gmrs!
  4. What I meant was a cb station (11 meters) big enough to cause interference across an area the same size as a cheap $30 chinese handheld can on a repeater with good coverage will cost minimum of $1000 in equipment and alot of effort put in.
  5. The funny part is 11 meters is the only band that doesn't seem to suffer from serial harassment in our area. CCR's can be had for less than $30 ready to go out of the box and can create havoc over a vast distance in any repeater in the vhf/uhf bands that they can get into, where as a proper 11 meter set up capable of making any impact outside of a few miles is going to require spending $1000 and up.
  6. I think it would be an excellent sticky to have at the top of the equipment review section
  7. If you want to hit that repeater from your house you could try a yagi antenna and pointing it towards the repeater.
  8. Kerchunking is the act of keying up a repeater and not saying anything. When ever you key up while searching for a repeater tone always throw out your callsign.
  9. try inputting ctcss 141.3 on all your repeater channels and keying up and throwing out your call sign. If you hear it ID immediately or you hear a squelch tail after you key down you found a repeater. 141.3 is considered the travel tone and many open repeaters use it. After you find a repeater try calling out at different times of the day on it requesting permission to use it. That is what I do to access unlisted repeaters. So far everyone I have contacted has been very nice and usually don't mind you using them as long as you are licensed and don't abuse it. Things most repeater owner don't like is kerchunking, foul language, interruptions of on going conversations, and unlicensed users. Most repeater owners welcome more users so don't be mic shy.
  10. 15 to 20 miles but there is one high on a commercial tower that is close to 30. The higher the tower the further you will able to hit it. I am not far from you, I am down in the south east corner near DE, I may try to hit a few of the repeaters in your area the next time I am going up to cabelas.
  11. I have the ghost antenna on my mobile and I have no problem hitting most repeaters that I hit with my 5/8 Nagoya 5.5db that is now on my base. The repeater you are hearing may have a really high db gain antenna and you may be just out of range. Try driving towards its location so you can rule out a possible antenna issue. It could also have a split pl tone which midlands can't do.
  12. How far can you run a jumper cable from the radio to the face plate on one of these detachable face plates? I would love to put my antenna up higher on my hill but I would have to run way to much coax down to get it into my house and deal with all that line loss. Could I just put the radio up there in a shed and run the faceplate down to the house on a roll of data cable?
  13. You can easily report interference online using this link. The more complaints filed about a particular violator will increase FCC response. https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us
  14. Hey Justin, I live in your area and I am well aware of the activities you are hearing. Send me a private message and I will discuss details of this matter in private
  15. How long did it turn out to be? I wonder if this works on the MXT275.
  16. I figured it was something like that, Thanks.
  17. So the btech 50x1 manual has a DCS code table near the back. They each have a number then the code next to it. It starts at #001 and code D023N and goes to #105 code D754N then it switches at #106 and seems to start back over but instead of D023N it has D023I listed. My question is what do the the letters at the beginning and end stand for? I don't see this type of letter and code number combination used anywhere else. What is the difference between the code with the N and the same code with an I next to it?
  18. Another thing you can do is key up the repeater and state your call sign, state that you are new to GMRS, and ask if anyone can hear you and that you are interested in casual conversation
  19. Since there are so few actual gmrs licenses where you live try using the database to contact them and see if they would be interested in a weekly net on one of the repeaters. If you get just 2 or 3 guys using the repeater and sending traffic that will usually generate more interest in those listening to either hop in or maybe those hearing you on frs will get their license and join in. That is how I end up getting a repeater capable radio. Our family had a license since 2017 but I only ever used FRS handhelds, this summer there was alot of traffic on the local repeaters due to people being locked down due to Covid so I went and ordered a btech 50x1 to be able to join in the conversation.
  20. My brothers have had the midlands for several years now. They have the same issues mentioned above. Unless the repeaters you plan on using have the same tones on input and output then you are out of luck. I have had the btech 50x1 for a little over a month now and I can't complain. It has no problem setting up different input and output tones and definitely has better range on high power than their midlands do. I have had 3 different antennas on it and they all do well. The browning 450, the Nagoya 200c, and currently the midland ghost. Unless something better comes to the market in the $150 to $250 new price range the btech is the top preformer. Your other option could be to get the 32w btech mobile amp that run about $100 and just turn your current handheld into a quick detach mobile unit.
  21. And of course I screw up my first post by accidentally posting under my brothers call sign!
