That is your answer from Socalgmrs. I know the TD-H3 can be configured via certain buttons pushed during power on to be GMRS, HAM, or both but that does not make any frequency outside of the fixed number of "channels" GMRS. As previously stated, if your radio is GMRS certified it will not be able to TX on your example frequency 441.000 or any other freq outside of GMRS. If your radio will TX on 441.000 it does not make that frequency GMRS. Again, you can monitor any frequency you want you just shouldn't be able to TX on any non GMRS frequency on a GMRS certified radio. Those are the rules (not laws). What you do with those regulations is up to you. As long as you are not being a douche canoe with what ever radio you are using the worst thing that will probably happen is you piss off a bunch of people. And it would appear you are already off to a good start doing that...

UPDATE: Talked to my friend this morning and told him there are work arounds for his issue. He said he was just going to put them back in the box until he could figure out how to do that. Then he said he just wanted to be able to talk to his family. I told him about the GMRS versions of Baofengs (he likes the price point) so he is going to send the UV5R radios back and get a couple of the GMRS versions, and, get a government permission slip. He travels with his family a lot so he can use them for car to car comms as well. Sometimes GMRS is the answer for keeping it simple.

I don't have the Q10G but I have the 935G+ with the Channel Wizard. When I use the Channel Wizard to change that setting I have to press the Exit key to get back to the home screen and pressing Exit saves the changes. I also tried making the change and just letting the Channel Wizard time out and the change was saved. I don't know the answer to your issue I just thought I would let you know how the channel wizard works on a different, although similar, radio. Lets us know how it turns out.

A friend has purchased a couple of Baofeng UV5R radios for SHTF. He is not a radio person. He has entered a frequency he just wants to be able to listen to, however he can also can also TX on that frequency which would not be a good thing to do. Is there a way to save that frequency to a memory channel and then turn off TX from the radio's keypad? Let me get all of this out of the way so folks don't have to give me the standard responses: That radio is a CCP - Yes, I know. Get a different radio - Yes, I know. Use CHIRP to program it - Not going to happen. No computer. It is a piece of crap radio - Yes, I know. Use the Baofeng CPS - Not going to happen. No computer. Get a different radio - Yes, I know. Is he a licensed Amateur Operator - The regulations have been discussed with him. Baofengs suck and so do the people who buy them - OK Read the manual - I did. Can't find anything about that. It is a POS CCP, what do you expect - Yes, thank you Use the search function - I have. Both on this site and others. Now that we have all of that out of the way... I don't own one of these and I don't know anyone near me that does. This person lives over two hours from me and I can't just pop over to figure it out. The real answer may very well be "You can't get there from here", but I just don't know.

I have a 1/4 wave 6" GMRS antenna on my vehicle and it works very well. Much better than a handheld antenna inside the metal box. I went with the shorter 1/4 wave because my vehicle is pretty tall and longer antennas would occasionally hit things and got in the way when I have a kayak on top.

Have you tried scanning with the engine off in your Tahoe? It is strange that you also get it in your house too. I have had this happen with a handheld in one certain area and I figured it was just a transmission of some kind in that area.

I have a 935G+ and changed RPT-16 from 462.5750 to 462.550 and saved the change. I then turned the radio of and back on and then checked to make sure the change was still there. Then I used the channel wizard to change RPT-16 back to 462.5750 and saved the change. Everything is normal again. I'm not sure what you did but I tried to reproduce your issue and couldn't. The Channel Wizard worked for me.

My wife of almost 44 years has never been into radio although she didn't mind me being into them. She now has her own pink GMRS radio. It only took one emergency situation for her to see the value of GMRS. The "once in 1000 years" has happened 5 times to us in the last 7 years, in the form of wildfire evacuations, snow storms taking down power and cell service and various other loss of power or cell service events. Oh and one semi lost person in the mountains that wouldn't have been lost had they carried an available radio. She took advantage of the cell phone outage last week to teach our 6.5 year old granddaughter how to talk on the radio.

I didn't realize the Q10's don't have that function. I rely on that with my 935G+ when monitoring two frequencies.

I think it is a good radio. I bought one for my son-in-law and he has no problems with it. As the Queen of Everything GMRS, stated, the radio is fiddly. There is a lot going on with it and it isn't as easy to navigate in, menu wise, as some other GMRS radios. My s-i-l also has a KG-935G that is his goto radio. I have the HAM KG-UV9PX version and have never had any issues with it. Computer programming is less hassle than using the radio keyboard on both. I have a KG-935G+ I use as my goto. I have programmed a lot of the stuff that comes on the UV9GX/PX into the 935G+.

In a large scale emergency (what ever that means) you might want to have a Short Wave radio and a random piece of wire for an antenna. You can get news from all over the world.

I have turned off the voice from any radio I have that has that option. Having said that, the radio won't use any words not already in their library. If you name a channel "Bozo 478" the radio will just announce the channel slot that holds your label.

I'm with you 653. I misunderstood the meaning of the original post.

There is no two way communication so I don't think it counts as linking. And as far as broadcasting goes, you are not broadcasting something on the GMRS frequencies so that doesn't meet the "requirements" of the regulations regarding the GMRS service. But, I am not a smart person so YMMV.

Be careful, some people (no "") do not care for sarcasm, humor, nor fun of any kind. I read it in another thread on this forum. It would appear forums should be limited to the dry exchange of non opinionated data. I believe this would provide a safer place for all involved and I, for one, would welcome it.

If it were HAM you could talk to strange lonely men about the weather/latest medical issues, but since you are on GMRS you will probably just talk to nobody. However, as someone recently pointed out, radio can be a lot like the movie Beetlejuice. If, on GMRS, you say CQ three times a HAM operator will magically appear to make your life miserable. Yes. That is it. I got it because it specifically covered the GMRS range. And with the price it wasn't much of a waste of cash if it didn't work as you never know whether some of this stuff is unusable junk. The two I got turned out to be usable junk. YMMV.
