Since the uv9g is a GMRS radio it is pretty hard to mess up. Some things to think about: Are you close enough to the repeater? If you know the general location you could move closer to it until you are sure you are actually opening the repeater. Have you tried simplex with another radio to make sure your radio is transmitting? Is there traffic on the repeater? I'm sure you have double checked your RX/TX tones but you might want to leave the RX tone off if the repeater has one so you can hear all the traffic on that frequency. I'm sure others will chime in with things I didn't mention. Don't give up.

What radio are you using?

A couple of years we got snowed in and then the power went out for a week. Cell service was down as well. We used GMRS radios to check on a couple of neighbors and to contact family members who lived at a lower elevation. My well neighbor and I were helping other folks in our area dig out and I used my radios to stay in touch with my wife while I was away from our property. I'm trying to get others in our area to get a radio and learn how to use it so we can check on each other when local crap happens. Sometimes all you need to do is talk to a neighbor.

My granddaughter is at the age where she enjoys talking to me on GMRS using her parents radio or sometimes her grandmother's handheld. Good times.

I thought about that too, but thankfully a reset fixed it. I don't think a reset will help with kill or stun.

I was out and about the other morning and while waiting on someone I turned on my KG-Q10H. The last time I had used it I had it set to TDR monitoring the local Sheriff’s frequency and a local 2m repeater. When I turned the radio on all was as I had left it except the speaker icon on both areas had a line through it. I was not receiving any signal in either area. No signal strength bar and no green light indicating the radio was receiving. I normally have my KG-935G in the car with me so I turned it on and was receiving traffic on both of those same frequencies. I went through the menu settings and nothing was muted. I was able to go through both menus and could select any saved channel and still no receive. When I tried to transmit to the 2m repeater nothing happened, no red LED no signal bar. I moved to a simplex frequency and tried to transmit with the same result. While sitting there I went ahead and did a factory reset through the menu option 48 and when the radio restarted the line though the speaker icon was gone. I was able to punch in the SO frequency and the 2m repeater frequency and received traffic on both. I was able to transmit to the repeater and on simplex. When I got home I reprogrammed the Q10H via the Wouxun software and all is good. I have checked it daily since that happened and the glitch has not occurred again. Just thought I would share the experience in case this happens to anyone else. The KGQ10H replaced an 18 year old Yaesu VX-6R that up and died on me a while back. The Q10H is a great radio and this is the first issue I have had with it. In the 18 years I had and used the Yaesu I had turned it on several times and found that the memory was wiped, so weird things happen.

This is one more thing I didn't know. If a person's radio didn't support cross-mode tones they could always just the leave RX tone off. They would receive all traffic on that frequency in range but that probably isn't too big of a deal. I, too, avoid Goober Operated Repeaters. There is one GOR in an area I travel occasionally, that after seeing the clues, decided it would be to my benefit not to use the repeater.

You can only use one channel at a time.

I have a 35 year old Fluke 27 that has never let me down. I had a supervisor that wanted some measurements taken inside of a 72 KV switchyard. The two operators on duty refused to perform the task and reminded the supervisor (who had been an operator and went through the high voltage training) that measuring tapes were not allowed inside of a live switchyard. He got mad and went in the switchyard to get the measurements anyway. He lived but will never fully recover from what it did to his body. That was in a very specific professional setting, but the lessons apply to anyone working with any voltages.

The Texas GMRS Network has quite a few repeaters listed in the Houston area. Do a search for them. You have to be a member to use their repeaters. I have family in Beaumont and joined their group to access a Repeater in that area. Edit: You must have a GMRS license to use their repeaters.

Well, unless you prescribe to the flat earth theory there is the curvature of the earth between the West Coast and Hawaii. UHF is a little more obstruction dependant than VHF but but are line of sight.
