I bought a BE for my 905G as well... was planning on using it next week on a short road trip... however, this thread has me a bit concerned now as to whether or not I should even use it. Part of me wants to but the other part of me doesn't want to risk it

Absolutely. On the KG-905G you have 256 memories. You can use the same repeater frequencies over and over and any combination of tones and power settings.

KE8PLMMichael,
Thanks for the info... I'm quickly filling up all those memory channels with repeaters from locations I tend to drive near. I'm loving this 905G and am glad I went with such a nice HT rather than one of a lesser price/quality... thanks to all you guys who have helped out with all my questions.

Took your advice and ordered the UT-72G yesterday rather than the 770G... much better choice, thx.

Good Day Roadrunner.
A GMRS antenna is no more a magnet for lightening than a tree, television antenna, or utility pole. However, any antenna outdoor and exterior feed-line that is not properly grounded puts your radio equipment unnecessarily at high risk. The odds of your antenna taking a direct hit is statistically very low. If ever it does take a direct hit then your antenna, feed-line and radio will be destroyed no matter how well your stuff is grounded. On the flip side, static build-up from wind and spikes from near-by lightening strikes are the most likely ones to take out your equipment. However with proper grounding the odds of damage to your internal equipment becomes incredibly low.
Through an abundance of caution some folks do disconnect there radio equipment from the feed-line during storms. I admit that I do during major electrical storms and when leaving town. For me it is easy to do so I do.
All that said I have a TV connected to an outdoor antenna that has been properly grounded for 20 years. Trees 30 yards away have taken direct hits many times yet my TV has never been affected. I attribute this to surge-suppression on the incoming power line and property grounding of the antenna and feed-line before it enters the home.

Good info to know... I have yet to set up a base station but when I do I will likely do the same as you... disconnect it when out of town and definitely when a thunderstorm moves in.

This topic brings back a memory from the very early 1980's when I was young.
My dad was a semi driver all his life and back then we lived in a trailer. He had a CB base station with a tower and a fiberglass CB antenna. Which the antenna came in two sections with a metal couple in the middle and had a metal tip.
One night there was a nasty lightning storm. That night lightning hit the CB antenna blowing it up in little tooth pick pieces. Few days later we found the metal couple fused together and found the metal tip in the cornfield like 200 yards away.
That's crazy... and was probably a bit scary as well!

I want to add another repeater to my KG905G memory but I already have another repeater with the same frequency programmed. Am I able to add another repeater with the same frequency but with different tones?

I disconnect all my raised antennae when not in use. Also disconnect power supplies. Learned that the hard way when lightning struck a tree 50 feet from my house and antennae with everything connected. The only radio thing damaged was an incoming power supply filter on a HF rig, disconnecting my antenna would not have saved that, but disconnecting the input power probably would have. Open ended wires are not effective inductors, but loops/coils are, esp closed loops.
Now I not only power down radios and power supply, I disconnect them. Fused power strip with Anderson Power Pole plugs, I just yank them out when not in use.
Next door neighbor lost 2 AC's and 2 TV's. I also had an unused flourescent light ballast short out. 3 hours to identify the source of breaker tripping because ballast wasn't active and at the end of a circuit with a long line; embarrased that I hadn't disconnected it when it stopped working.
AC-
Good advice, I wasn't sure if a gmrs antenna would be as susceptible to lightening since the ones I've seen advertised and shrouded in PVC which I thought might help reduce the chances of a strike... I guess not.

Are gmrs antennas lightening magnets and if so I'm assuming they have to be grounded via a copper grounding rod??? Not that the Mojave desert gets much lightening but it sure did last week when that day long thunderstorm rolled in... made me ponder this question.

YES, HOWEVER THE UT-72G IS A LITTLE SMALLER AND COMES WITH A SMA ADAPTER FOR THE KG-906G. ALTHOUGH I ALSO HAVE THE KG-1000G WITH THAT NAGOYA 770G AND IT IS A PERFECT COMBINATION!
TOM-
Yeah I think that's what I'll go with (KG-1000G and the 770G) when I am able to pull that financial trigger on the 1000G... in the meantime I'll just utilize my 905G as a HT and a mobile unit.

I actually did a little more research and think that when the time comes to upgrade my mobile power I'll just go with the Wouxun KG-1000G rather than purchase an amplifier for my HT...

Your the man, thank you!... also... I think it was you that mentioned an amplifier of some sort in another thread we connected on that would increase the output of a HT from 5w to 40-50w??? Thanks again...

Is it possible to connect a KG-905G to a Nagoya NL-770G mobile antenna using the provided coax that comes with the magnetic base mount (Nagoya RB-MJPL) rather than use the antenna that comes on the 905G?

quoting Rich for comparison; I just checked California via ULS (almost 6 years later, to the day), and got:
14,295 active licenses in CA.
123 in my metro area.
interesting part is the relative size of the two towns; one is near 1 million, and has 68 active licenses. the other is a little over 100k, and has 55 active licenses. was trying to get the entire county, but the geosearch isn't playing along.
And since March of this year it has gone up to 16,138

Thanks guys... definitely answers my question and any others I might have had pertaining to this subject. My concern was whether or not I'd have to be upgrading to a digital system in the near future... and that doesn't appear to be the case

Would someone be willing to give a simple breakdown of analog vs digital signals and what is the current state of GMRS as it pertains to these two types of transmission? My limited research shows that most HT broadcast in analog... will GMRS be moving into a more digital platform? Thx

Delivery failure update ... after speaking with my local post office this morning I was able to confirm that my original Wouxun purchase was indeed returned to sender to the confusion of both myself and the lady I spoke with. According to her I should have received a "notice to pick-up" my package from the local post office in my mailbox (my address was labeled correctly on the shipping notice she looked up). Instead there was a complete failure on the technological & human end of the USPS logistical process. She was very polite and took some additional info from me in an effort to prevent this from happening again (3rd time now). However at this point I have lost almost all hope in the success of any attempt to do so. I spoke with B2WR's, after speaking with the post office, to let them know they would be receiving a Wouxun 905G at some point later today from the USPS and to go ahead and ship out my 2nd order asap with the battery eliminator, through UPS this time though... sorry for the rant... just needed to vent

I have https://www.buytwowayradios.com/wouxun-smo-002.html connected and draped over the mirror and works great.
What antenna is that? Do you know if it's compatible with the 905G?

Any speaker/mic that is compatible with standard Baofeng radios (not the waterproof ones) should work with the KG-905G as well. There are multiple offerings from numerous vendors, but they all appear to be rebranded versions of three or four actual models. I've had good and bad experiences with some that I've tried. They vary in price from $7 dollars up to the $80 one you mentioned, but as of now, because of my mixed experiences with a couple of different models, there isn't one particular type that I can point you to that is consistently good. Unfortunately, my experience has shown that the radios themselves tend to have better consistency in quality than do most of the accessories I've used.

Thanks for the insight... I'll probably hold-off then on purchasing a speaker/mic and just use the 905G to talk directly on with the battery terminator while driving. I already have an itch to purchase the KG-1000G for my truck later on down the road once I become more gmrs savvy...

I called B2WR but their closed Saturday and Sunday, so I just wrote an explanation in the notes section on my new order which explained everything in great detail. I'll probably still give them a call Monday just to confirm things with them.

Was all excited to receive my new Wuoxun KG-905G today (even received an email alert that it was out for delivery) when out of nowhere I received another email alert that it was being returned to sender because my shipping address was not valid (I live in a rural portion of the county). I had this problem before and thought I had resolved the issue by contacting the USPS...obviously not ... I purchased this property a year ago and have had several Amazon packages delivered without issue but the USPS just can't seem to get it together... Anyone else ever had this issue??? I just went ahead and re-ordered another 905G radio plus the battery eliminator but paid extra for UPS delivery this time. Also, what corded PTT/mic would work with this radio? The only one from buytwowayradios.com that was compatible with the 905G was the most expensive waterproof one for $79.99 however, the K1 sub-model was out of stock... I couldn't find any other offered ones that stated they were compatible... Thanks.

RR, as I said I use an old XP and not a PC guy, more Mac... I was lucky to get the groups setup with cut and paste but not now using I did see that https://www.rtsystemsinc.com/Handhelds_c_65.html will be coming out with a 905G software and not here yet... Wouxun software works, I just have not mastered it yet.
Keep us up to date on what is going one...

Will do... I run Windows 10 on my laptop so hopefully there won't be any issues but if the Comm port issue arises I'll just follow the op's work-around... I'm still pretty new to all this but at least I've learned how to program my Baofeng with Chirp so I have a little experience with PC radio programming...

Any update on this issue? My 905 should arrive Saturday and was just curious if the software issue had been resolved.

Wouxun ANO-003G Antenna?

Has anyone used this aftermarket antenna? I was considering it as an upgrade to the factory antenna on my 905G. If it has no significant improvements though I'll probably just stay with the factory antenna... thx
