1. XTS set to 462.550, (set three different PLs to test) on the transmit PL, UV5r picked each up to their correct setting on the XTS.

Doing the same on the receive PL, same thing, UV5r picked up the set PLs.

This one has me baffled....   Why would the XTS work simplex, without issue... but anything repeater it is throwing a tantrum.

So your transmitter on the XTS is working fine.
Now set the receive tone on the UV5R to match the repeater input tone. Try it again. If you don’t receive the transmission then your transmit tone is wrong on the XTS. If you receive the transmission then there’s nothing wrong with your transmission.

No changes to the XTS Repeater channel/personality.

    UV5r 462.550, 136.5; XTS hears UV5r.  UV5r does not hear XTS.

    UV5r 467.550, 136.5; UV5r hears XTS.  XTS does not hear UV5r.

    Not though the repeater.

It doesn’t seem to make sense that your radio works fine on simplex but fails on a repeater. Set your other radio to receive on the repeater input frequency but leave tones turned off and see if your transmission to the repeater is picked up by your other radio.

Second Radio (UV5r) manually entered to the Repeater Input 467.550 No tones, UV5r hears the XTS (no ptt dropoff or timeout); XTS does not hear the UV5r when keyed back.

Keying the repeater with tones from the XTS, the UV5r no tones, receives the beep from the repeater on 462.550.

Keying 467.550 no tones from the UV5r, XTS hears nothing from the repeater.

    Repeater:

    462.550

    +5  (467.550)

    136.5 input

  4. I am not sure what my XTS is doing, but it will not hold repeaters to talk.  When I key to talk, nothing; but I will get the beep back from the repeater as if I key chunked it.  It has been working just fine until recently.  Nothing has changed, I have not changed any setting since July (has been working fine) and a re-review of the programming everything looks correct.  I've tried with and without the remote mic attached; with stock and vehicle antenna - nothing.

If I just regular non repeater channels, there is zero issues.

Personality, and channel programming, PLs, all look fine for the repeater channels, yet it wont hold it.   Amazingly, The UV5r used in my other hand, hits and hold just fine on a rubber ducky.

Nothing has changed on the repeater side, same PLs blah blah.

I am confused on what else it could be.... as it was working just fine and than all of a sudden it wants to throw a tantrum.  (Vehicle antenna = Midland Ghost and 6db, also tried a dual ban window mount; And the rubber ducky stock antenna)

I purchased the KG-1000G a while back, but never got around to setting it up or installing it. I didn't feel comfortable running the wires and whatnot. So I found a place that will do it for me in the next few days. And no, it wasn't cheap. But I don't care. This will be my first mobile radio, so I'm excited.

I'm currently using two of the KG-935Gs and I like them a lot. They're able to hit my local repeater about 30 miles away, which is pretty awesome, but I can't reach any other repeaters. Hopefully this new mobile unit will help out.

That's all I have to share. I didn't really have anyone else to share it with. This stuff is super neat to me for some reason, so I spend money on it without any real world use for it and without any people I know IRL that's also into it. I suppose I need to start making friends through the repeater soon.

No pictures of the install?  :)

The RT97 is ideal. Had one in my motorhome and would cover most camp grounds just fine with a decent antenna. The issue with the surecomm simplex repeaters is people understanding how they work and worse if they can hear both conversations. Save up and get the RT

Agreed with the people understanding the fact YOU ARE GOING TO HEAR YOURSELF... LOL   Once most understood that part, it worked decent.

  7. Here is what I did if you don't want to spend the funds on a Reteveis. (Altho if I had a travel trailer the Reteveis with a extendable mass antenna would be my ideal setup.)

Now this isn't a epic high power repeater but is self contained and deployable while out camping.  Hoist it into a tree, or set it up on a hill.  It has run a couple days with moderate traffic. Worked decent for when people ventured out from where we camped surrounded by hills.  HT to HT at camp would not hit through the hill. Plopped this little box on the top and was able to bounce up and over the hit back to camp.

Its just a Baofeng, Surecom and a HF box with some random connectors.  Runs completely on their own batteries.  As long as you understand the Surecom takes and rebroadcast your transmission and everyone remembers to give a few seconds for the transmission.

Think maybe I am into it around 100 bucks give or take.

  8. All else, set yourself up with an emergency coms radio. Basic know how of use for emergency/shtf/power outages etc.    For me, I started with wanting something I could get a hold of my family who is across town about 30 min away on a good day drive.  I also off road a fair amount and the radio are a must.  So I have gone down the rabbit hole on radios.

Also living in Southern California with wide fires, radios came in very handy for those directly effected in the recent wildfire; as their power, cell towers, internet lines all went down (the main run in burned).  The amateur side was relaying messages from people in the dead zone, down to people with power, cell service etc; and where relaying messages to family members.

And then add earthquakes, we haven't seen a GOOD one in some years to REALLY put the infrastructure to a test for rigidity.

I also have the benefit of several GMRS and Amateur repeaters in my area.

  9. You can also tie multiple licenses to the PO Box without issue.

When looking for a PO Box (I used USPS), shop the Post Office that around you within a short driving distance.  The Post Office that is like 7 minutes from me, a PO was $65 every 6 months.  A Post Office about 15 minutes from me was $30 for 6 months.  You REALLY only have to go to that Post Office ONCE to pick up the keys, especially if its JUST used for GMRS/Armature licensing.   ANNND sign up for informed delivery and you can see anything going to it.

I also use the PO box address for when I ship anything sold online.

  10. Come on man....   new post...    "Cant hit a repeater" "Can hit a repeater"       How does an antenna adapter change hitting or not hitting a repeater?

Every weekend I try to hit 6 different repeater in my area with no luck. Today after putting a antenna adapter on my 905G I hit a repeater (2 repeaters and one live person contact) since getting into GMRS. After getting home I checked out this sites map and It seems that 5 repeaters that I have permission to use are well not there anymore. One repeater I know is to far away, it is kind of a bunch list item. But who are the folks I hear on channel 27 /  RPT 19? Spill over onto GMRS channel 19

There are several reasons with the big one being that the Wouxun makes my Jeep cluttered.  I like that the Midland is all in the mic.  The quality feel of the 575 is another, and then the simplicity.  So when I'm not using it, it disappears, or at worst, hangs on a mic holder out of the way and without looking like clutter.  It also has better volume so I can hear it with the top down.  I had to use an auxillary speaker with the Wouxun, even with the mic speaker and the base speaker turned on.  The mic speaker is so weak it might as well not even be there.  The Wouxun's backlighting is terrible, too.  Too bright at night. You can't dim it or change the color.  And the best location of the face plate, which worked well for info and usage put that light in a bad spot for me at night. (Top center of the dash.)

The Wouxun has performed well in terms of range and reception, but the 575 is just as good there.  But again, the higher volume makes it superior.

So I liked the Wouxun from a performance standpoint, but ergonomically, it just doesn't work for me.

It is going on Ebay or FB Marketplace soon if I get no reasonable offers here.  I have the box and all the cords. There isn't a scratch or mark on it, so it is in new condition.  $320 takes it, shipping included within the continental US.  If local, then $300.

Make sense.  I am moving the other way away from the MXTs for radios that allow more.   Altho the wife's TJ still running the MXT115

    Re-did the wife's TJ mount.

Found a LED third brake light for the TJ at the swapmeet today.  Got home installed and the ball started rolling on a new mount, inspired from an earlier post.

Let me clarify my first statement. I didn't hear any traffic on any GMRS channel or repeater. So if I don't hear anybody on a GMRS channel there is no point in my making a request for HELP! As repeater step on channels 15-22 that met to me "no one was home". My antenna is a GMRS tuned mag mount Nagoya (sell check).

What radio and what are your settings?    Repeaters take extra settings to 'activate' the repeater so it itself is listening to tones. That tells the repeater HEY I have something I need to send out.  Just flipping to a repeater channels doesn't mean its configured for the repeater your are attempting to access.   Regular GMRS channels, yep, flip to channel and anyone else on that channel within rage can hear you with no extra settings.

EDIT:  Reading some of your other post, I am leaning toward trolling....    please prove me wrong.

So very simple, you just got to SCREAM in the microphone. Then folks will say wow you got a wide band radio.

    GMRS chart

mitzvah posted a topic in General Discussion

I ordered one of those GMRS charts from BTWR (no affiliate link) and found it in my mail box today. The nice mailperson had folded it in thirds. The shipper had not put a "DO NOT FOLD" stamp or label on the folder or even put a bit of cardboard to protect the chart. I'm now going to step outside an SCREAM.

Do we identify ourselves with our call sign at the beginning and end of our transmission? Is there a proper etiquette on how we should talk on the radio. I have questions about programming a repeater on my radio. The instructions that came with my Midland MTX 90 seem a little confusing. How do I find out if there's any local clubs in my area.

MXT90 does not have repeater channels built in.  I believe that starts with the MXT115/275 on ward.  The 90 is like a car mounted HT.

Asking for a friend.  Is your tailight mount GMRS antenna working ok?  He has a '99 TJ that he runs topless, has a rack on the back and is asking me about which antenna and mount (hard or mag mount).  Since I run only 1/4 wave on a ground plane I don't have a solid answer for which antenna type and mounting solution might work best for him.  1/2 wave, 5/8, etc., etc..

I'll continue through the thread from the end backward to see what I come up with.  Kind of talking him out of the Midland and leaning him toward the Wouxux 20w.

Wife's TJ has the MXT115 with the 6db Midland mounted to the passenger tail light.  No issues.

How simple of a radio does he want?   I ran the MXT for the wife since she is one that, turn radio on, turn to channel and talk type. I knew if I put anything she has to do anything more, she would never use it.

I've got my MXT575 up and running in my Jeep, so the Wouxun KG1000G is up for sale.  PM me if interested.

I got $50 on it....   LOL

I have seen a couple people swapping out the KG for a 575...  Can I ask your reason for getting away from the KG?

That guy on youtube lives on a hill and has perfect line of site to the repeater 69 miles away - meaning there is nothing between him and it. I'm pretty sure he's explained that in pretty much every video.

I'm not saying he is not telling the truth. I just don't see how a 5 watt HT with a range of up to 36 miles (elevated terrain)(BuyTwoWayRadios GMRS chart) and from the fellows den, though his window and though the trees across the street can hit the Mt Pal repeater 69 miles away.

Something tells me your radio is not programmed right for the repeater...  Have you EVER tried hitting it before you needed the it...?    What are you using/settings?

Did you try hitting the repeater that off Mt. Wilson?

As for that YouTuber guy.  His area sits above most of the IE, with not much in the way, that's how he is able to reach so far.   He also has a repeater that I have easily hit from the 210/57 from a HT.  And hell I am up in the Desert and hitting a repeater that is roughly ~15-20 miles from me on a HT (is MUCH better with a car antenna) without issue from my garage in a housing track..
