  1. This! If a person is an ass, it doesn’t matter what radio service they’re using.
  2. 5 minutes Actually, we hams tend to call each other by our call signs more often than our names. We often log those contacts. If we’re having a net we check in and then wait to be called back. We say our call sign every 10 minutes or sooner and at the end of the conversation. When I use GMRS it’s strictly casual on a first name basis. I don’t care what the other person’s call sign is. I use mine at the end of every 15 minutes and when ending a conversation, but otherwise I just don’t say it. GMRS is like talking on the phone to someone except simplex.
  3. Many radios have the ability to monitor two channels. Those are the two.
  4. On the Midland mxt400, DCS 411 is code #51:
  5. Why then would you pose the question in a forum, which by definition is populated by random internet people?
  6. Thanks, Rich. I am not the target audience for this change but I understand how thankless running a site like this can be.
  7. You don’t need a receive tone. If you leave it empty you receive everything on that frequency.
  8. Welcome to the forum! That is how GMRS frequently is. Making random contacts with people on radio is more of a ham radio pursuit.
  9. Possibly because copper tubing slim-jims are also sold on KB9VBR’s site: https://www.jpole-antenna.com/shop/uhf-440-470-mhz-slim-jim-antenna/ What distinguishes a slim-jim is the folded dipole design, not that it’s made from flatline.
  10. You bet! Happy Easter!
  11. Pick the RPT channel that receives on 462.650 MHz. It will have the right offset for transmitting on 467.650 MHz Set the TX tone to 192.8 Hz. Leave RX tone empty. Press PTT and ask for a radio check. If nobody answers they might be at church. Happy Easter!
  12. The last thing I heard about the GM-30 was that it was shipping with one channel (15) not working. I wouldn’t order one. I would buy a Wouxun KG-805 and watch Notarubicon videos if I were you.
  13. It can be confusing at first. There are eight repeater channels. Usually they are numbered 23-30, but sometimes they are marked RP15-RP22 or something like that. They receive on the same 462.xxx frequencies as 15-22, but when you’re on a repeater channel your radio automatically transmits on 467.xxx MHz. Your manual should have a list of channels that reflects that. So, just turn to one of the eight repeater channels. The repeater owner sets the PL tone and makes it available to users who seek permission. If it’s a repeater listed on this site then you have to read the information for that particular repeater or request it from the owner. Welcome to the site!
  14. The FT60r is a very nice radio for use on the 2 meter and 70 cm ham bands, but without modification cannot transmit on GMRS. GMRS is not amateur radio. There are some nice radios available for GMRS and they’re typically easier to use than a ham radio. Personally, I really enjoy being a ham and if that interests you I’d be happy to recommend study guides, but if you’re just looking for a radio to use casually with your family or friends without learning about frequencies and the speed of light, GMRS is very nice. Welcome to the forums and good luck whatever you want to do.
  15. Swr shouldn’t be that high if the antenna is tuned right, but even that high doesn’t imply much loss unless you’re using cable with a lot of attenuation. LMR400 isn’t bad usually but could be damaged. Of course a really crappy cable will always yield a perfect SWR. Honestly that high of SWR isn’t a real concern but you might try testing SWR with a different cable to see if it helps.
  16. What frequency is your slim Jim tuned for?
  17. The bump in wattage will make no difference whatsoever. Quadrupling your power to 150 watts would only make a single point of difference on the S-meter.
  18. By whom? Yes. And some of them were not impressed: https://forums.mygmrs.com/search/?&q=Tidradio h8&search_and_or=or
  19. My understanding is that it’s a 30 amp power supply, not a 30 watt amp.
  20. The uv-5g plus is a GMRS radio, so the offset is baked in as long as you’re on a repeater channel.
  21. It sounds like the voltage drops. Hook a voltmeter to the power terminal right at the radio if you can and watch what happens to the voltage when the radio transmits.
