  1. Does your repeater system have a RECEIVER preamp?   That's one way to enhance the access range of the system without too much expense.  Please check with John E. - I believe that he mentioned something about those receive preamps awhile ago.

  2. William - that's a thought... on Wednesday, I was traveling well south of my normal location and wanted to speak with Jake (WQTAXXX) - When I called him on our local system, I also activated the only other repeater in my State set up the same way as our local - from 115 miles away... and I heard BOTH repeaters on at the same time.  The repeater time-out is different on both, so I knew that it was the other system well to my south that also came on. When two FM transmitters come on at the same time on the same frequency and at a nearly identical signal strength, 'growling' that is heard is the two systems competing to get into the mobile receiver.

If Bill can do a system search in his area for another system with the same access tone or code being activated from a mobile, that might shed some light on the 'noise'.

  3. Sounds like it might be their model NMO-150/450.

Good antenna... we have one in our emergency response Go-Bag with a magnetic NMO mount that sticks onto our metal command post table for close-proximity dispatching for our Chaplain Responder Team while on disaster responses. Depending on whether we are using VHF HT's or UHF HT's, we don't have to bring along a second antenna.

  4. Another thing to consider is that using the output of one GMRS repeater to activate the input of another GMRS repeater is not allowed under current regulations. Repeater input and output frequency availability is regulated and there is a 5 mhz offset between the 467 mhz repeater input channels and their corresponding 462 mhz repeater output channels.  To have one GMRS repeater activate another repeater by RF signals alone, would require that one repeater operate in reverse mode. That is not allowed.

Channel paring is covered in 47CFR95.29 [a] and and specifically says:

{a.} For a base station, fixed station, mobile station, or repeater station (a GMRS station that simultaneously retransmits the transmission of another GMRS station on a different channel or channels), the licensee of the GMRS system must select the transmitting channels or channel pairs (see §95.7(a) of this part) for the stations in the GMRS system from the following 462 MHz channels:

    462.5500, 462.5750, 462.6000, 462.6250, 462.6500, 462.6750, 462.7000 and 462.7250.

{ b.} For a mobile station, control station, or fixed station operated in the duplex mode, the following 467 MHz channels must be used only to transmit communications through a repeater station and for remotely controlling a repeater station. The licensee of the GMRS system must select the transmitting channels or channel pairs (see §95.7(a) of this part) for the stations operated in the duplex mode, from the following 467 MHz channels:

    467.5500, 467.5750, 467.6000, 467.6250, 467.6500, 467.6750, 467.7000 and 467.7250.

Hope that helps if this was being considered as well.

  5. Just picked up a mobile 2 dbi gain type EM WAVE, INC  antenna and tested it from 30 miles from the local repeater. Using a 25 watt Kenwood TK863G, I compared it to a 6 inch 1/4 wave (didn't access the repeater) as well as a PCTEL center loaded 30 inch gain type. There was no difference between the EM WAVE and the PCTEL antennas.  The EM WAVE is only 9 -1/2 inches high and is nearly invisible.

  6. Jerry - When you are in Photobucket 'library' and select a photo, as the individual photo comes up on the next screen, there is a menu on the right side of the screen that says "Links to Share the Photo" -  hover over the IMG line and hit the left mouse button once.  The line turns YELLOW with the word "Copied" when your computer has the link on the clipboard -

Then come here and paste that copied IMG line in a posting block.  I'm using a 'fuzzy' shot of my Schecter bass guitar bridge below as an example...

  7. There is a protocol in IP Bulletin software from  the Administrator's Control Panel that can create posting areas that can not be seen UNLESS a registered member logs in the normal way. Once the member logs in, the 'invisible' posting areas are then seen and available. None of the posts in those 'invisible' areas can be seen in any way by visitors or bots and those areas work exactly like the rest of the forum - ONCE a member is logged in to the forum.

  8. Rich - That's an excellent idea - but as you said, "use it sparingly" - so the search engine hits are maintained.

Perhaps a new BOT-Restricted section called "Members Only" with two posting sections to start with could be a test -  sections such as "Anything Goes" and "Member to Member Comments"  with rules stressed concerning venting, defaming or ridiculing others.

Any other members with thoughts on this idea that Rich has - please weigh in....

    Thank You.

  9. When Rich was doing forum maintenance May 26, he activated the secure connection info window so members know that if they are using a wireless device or router, that log-in data could be compromised by someone in your immediate area. This can happen in libraries, coffee shops and hotels to name a few.  This is for info only. Thank you.

  10. We are bumping up this announcement once again as a refersher to all members.

MyGMRS is one of the fastest growing GMRS and alternate radio service forums in the US. As a result of it's popularity, we are being "scanned" by countless 'spybots' from all the major search engines as well as some from other countries. We have seen as many as 30 search engine 'bots' collecting data here at one time.

We would just like to remind everyone that this forum is PUBLIC and if you don't want the world to see your personal info, don't post it.

  11. Quarterwave - everything is cool at your end and we sent you a PM regarding the situation to which you have responded to.

We will only say this one more time in the open before the staff here takes punitive action:

We DO NOT want to see any posted suggestions regarding BLATANT** unlawful operation - such as over power being an "OK - who cares" situation, Ham equipmment being used on GMRS frequencies and so on.  Any further postings of this type will trigger an automatic staff response which may decrease our membership by one, as well as being removed from the main website registration. The suggestions made by the individual in question may also potentially stir the interest of the Commission because the Commission IP address shows up occasionally as a guest here and the call sign of the person is clearly visible. Need we say more?

[** ref: the Part 90 equipment in Part 95 service is not a blatant issue as of this time and is still on the table for discussions as usual.]

  12. The staff at MyGMRS Forum would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable travel weekend.

Please use caution on the roads and if you need to use any of your radio equipment this weekend under emergency operating scenarios, please tell us about the situation when you return home.

The MyGMRS staff will be here all weekend to help with questions, etc.

Take care, be safe... and if you see a member of the military, please thank them for their service to this country.

Motorola made quite a few in that general time period. When I was in uniform in the early 70's, those were standard issue for search and rescue operations and had fairly good range. The P-11 and P-13 shown below were two of the more popular models. The telephone handset was a factory option that disabled the internal speaker on top of the unit as the handset was lifted off the optional handset cradle:

This is one of the first handset portables from 1949 - two watts and virtually useless:

And then there was the H-23.... a real nightmare to carry around all day:

  14. Logan5 - I wish I knew. That's in the Administrative Control Panel protocols and only Rich D. can get in there to check the character count limits in the software.  Again, the best way to reach Rich is through the main MyGMRS website 'Contact Us' patch or click on his name at the bottom of the main page and use the alternate contact form in there.

Wish I had the answer for you.
