National Radio Appreciation Day ! Febuary 13th. 2025
WRPQ991 replied to Jaay's topic in Amateur Radio (Ham)
B tech GMRS 50V run as a base with Nagoya NMO200C & ground plane kit.. gets out pretty well I can hit 3 local repeaters on low power. Central Texas Got a couple HH that I use when mobile Love my radios! -
They are set right, I double checked.. a few times. they come in kinda fuzzy. But clear with the MONI button
-
Many dont respond, put the R & T codes in and give it a shot..Not a dead key, announce your call sign..
-
My times??
-
We lived on a farm in western Nebraska, used the CH 14 walkie talkies alot for communication, as I grew up we would touch the antenna to the lightning rod on the barn, gave us a BIG antenna. we could talk for many miles. But nobody could get back to us except a few local truck drivers.
-
Ok, when listening to repeaters I have to push the MONI (monitor) button to hear people, but it gives me an ear full of static. Am I doing something wrong? I've tried adjusting squelch, doesn't help. I'm using it as a base, not mobile.
-
Are you just doing simplex or a small local repeater? Simplex can be done with a FRS radio (no license) while GMRS requires a license
-
I'm on a linked repeater Roadkill, Ive talked coast to coast and northern Ohio from my little radio in central Texas.. A lot of fun.. If you can get on a linked repeater. I use two others that are not linked for more local talk.
-
I'm on a linked repeater near Ft Hood. (it'll always be Ft Hood) I can talk all over the US on a B tech 50W on a base antenna

Connecting to a linked repeater
WRPQ991 replied to Nuthead19's topic in National and Regional GMRS Nets
If you can reach the repeater and know the CTSS number, put them in the radio and have fun. My BTech will find the CTSS numbers if the channel is busy. I'm quite active on the Roadkill network, reach coast to coast using linked repeaters. -
just my $0.02 maybe the rain helped ground your mast? Or the wet ground acted as a ground plane? I have a chimney mounted Nagoya I had some welding cable I used for a ground, overkill but it's what I had.

Why no state issued GMRS call sign license plates?
WRPQ991 replied to Lscott's topic in General Discussion
HatesPavement...cool plate -
Yeah I have a small CB in my Ranger, all I get its the illegal overpowered crap Its all over the band.. In in central TX and hear Florida, Detroit, somebody up in New England, a couple in Colorado all come in like they are next door. That's kinda why I went to GMRS

Teaching GMRS 101 - What would you want to know?
WRPQ991 replied to marcspaz's topic in General Discussion
Its hard to cover all GMRS radios, but the terminology is not standard. in and out tones are a big one. And repeater offsets. not all GMRS radios call it the same. And maybe a word on "Chirp" I've had alot of issues with it. -
Petitioning to get a few VHF frequencies added to GMRS
WRPQ991 replied to a topic in FCC Rules Discussion
Ok, so what is between 450.0 MHz (end of 70cm) and 462.5625 (beginning of GMRS) or between (top of GMRS) 467.7125 and 902.0 (bottom of 33cm) Kinda new to alot of this and I have nothing to scan these frequencies with. But they are NOT in the Ham spectrum, so what are they used for? And could GMRS expand into them? Ok so the existing GMRS would not be able to use them, but the FCC recently authorized FM to the CB world..Thanks to Cobra electronics. how many old CBs have FM? We started with 23 channels AM & SSB, then 40 AM & SSB now with FM -
What happens when a soldier speaks to a truck driver? Both have special acronyms and codes, Then a LEO gets involved, again different codes. So, a lawyer who speaks in circles and is incapable of answering a simple question gets involved with alot of leagaleese and double speak so it's nearly impossible to get a clear message. The FCC does not understand or really care so the OK it and there we have it..Everything should be in clear and concise English. And Alice Cooper says "mixerthingwhaynowbatcrapwhatdaywasitbefore." and we are all confused.

I have an older ICOM IC-731 that I still like, goes from 0.100.0 to 29.999.9 and everything in between. My BAUFENG will get me into the 2M and up, just no FM or SSB. About the only thing I can't get to is the 60M 50MHz band...Maybe not the newest whizbang equipment, but it works

I dont usually travel in a group, but when if/when I do its with a CB. It still has way more users and gets better range. I have a Nagoya Model NMO 200C antenna with NAGOYA GPK ground plane sitting at 35 ft and usually don't pick up anything. I push 47W and can't talk to repeaters 20 miles away. So far GMRS has been a big waste of money. I left it on scan from near Austin TX to Shreveport LA and didn't get a peep. Travel channel? Pick any of them nobody uses them anyway. Midland MXT 500 base/mobile Wouxun KG805G and Baofeng UV-9G handhelds

I picked up an ICOM IC731 but can't find any manuals or information on it. 19.76.5-29.976.5 I don't have the right antenna set up yet. Is the ATU 100 EXT a good antenna tuner 18-50MHz? Just kinda waiting to buy a tower/antenna and all the bells & whistles.

I'm hearing a repeater Loud and Clear, it says "welcome to the military repeater", I should be able to reach it as I'm less than 5 miles from FT Hood. But so far nothing..It transmits the same message about every 30 minutes or so...Is there any way to find out if it uses input or output tones? Or any information? Its on 462.550 Ch15 Also while scanning this morning I spoke with a ham operator about 12 miles away, who was just playing on the GMRS band...

A strange thing happened on my way to a new repeater......
WRPQ991 replied to WRWB464's topic in General Discussion
If I only wanted to talk to my wife I would have got a MURS 900MHZ radio. or simply walk into the other room. I got into GMRS to talk to other people. Not chatter away for hours but check on road conditions or events. There is only one repeater that I should be able to use, but so far nothing..don't know if I'm doing something wrong or just can't reach the distance. I've put it on scan and pick up NOTHING ever. Very disappointed by the whole deal. At least with the little CB in my truck I can hear the gravel haulers and a few other trucks that come thru daily. But no locals.. I've scanned the 10M band, the 12M band, 2M and 6M bands and only thing I pick up is a religious station in Nashville. So, I see no reason no get a ham license. Granted I don't have the right antenna for Ham bands. I've put quite a bit of $$ into the GMRS just to hear static. Radioddity DB20G on a Nagoya NMO200c high gain antenna with Nagoya GPK-01 ground plane, sitting 25ft high. A Wouxun KG 805G and Baofeng UV 9G handhelds, and the Midland MXT500 in my truck. And all I get is static. -
thank you I've edited the question. I was reading it wrong.

Some fantastic info on coax, very informative. But why when you buy a GMRS radio that comes with and antenna is the coax so tiny? OK, On to my question, how far apart should the base antennas be for CB 27Mhz 11 M and Gmrs 462--467 MHz both are vertical with ground plane. Both will be around 60 ft. I will probably never transmit on both at the same time but I don't want bleed over. I know the coax used will have alot to do with that too.

There is one in Troy TX I'll have to find his info
