  1. This has to be my favorite typo here ever...
  2. Does your dad have a ham license? If he does I would encourage you to get yours as well. Having a shared interest can be great. Having both licenses is fairly common. As for getting him interested in GMRS I would say get your license and if you can afford it get two radios and give him one. That might be all it takes. Good luck.
  3. @Northcutt114 thanks for sharing your ups and downs so that others (myself included) can learn from what you went through. I’ve just been following along and glad to hear things are working again.
  4. I see you are part of the Mesa Crest Repeater club... perhaps someone there can help you if you feel an in person meet up is more helpful you could try asking on their club page. I didn't see your other post so I don't know what it is you need but good luck.
  5. I have a Rite in Rain note book for this and anything else I want to remember. I did however (as @Davichko5650 mentioned) make a simple spreadsheet in numbers just to keep track of call signs of people I want to remember so I can reference to call them. I just added a second column for GMRS so I can remember their call sign there if I need it. Easy to look up quick on my phone. Simple enough to make it anyway you want. This is what I came up with.
  6. I have no experience with the Rocky Talkie but it is $180.00. The Rocky Talkies do look simple which can be a good thing sometimes. You can also pick up a Wouxon KG-S88G Plus for $129.99 which is a superhet (though I agree with @SteveShannon,I have no issue with a good SOC). It's also the same IP67. It has 400 channels VS Rocky's 128 (not that you'd need them), Bluetooth audio, usb-c charging... I have one original S88G and bought a new plus version for the wife for kayaking, SUP and camping (Orange). Lots to choose from including cheap Baofengs, I just put this out there because you mentioned outdoors and they are similar in function and cost to what you mentioned. Good luck in your decision.
  7. It certainly seems feature packed but a bit out of my budget. I saw somewhere that the SDS100 would be upgradeable for the same waterfall feature, something to keep an eye out for if you have it (I do not).
  8. Merry Christmas everyone! Will do
  9. I’m not trying to be argumentative but this just isn’t so for the entire state. Not yet anyway. Where I am there are seven different law enforcement departments you can scan not to mention all of fire agencies. Also the local high schools are unencrypted which I made a point of listening to along with the sheriffs during two lock downs as it’s very close to us. Exactly
  10. Exactly. Imagine a home and it's up on a hill but you had a shop further out on the property. Let's say your wife (who isn't interested in other radio traffic at all) but wants to be able to reach you. So you set up a radio at the house that was just on a 467 channel set with tones (a fixed station). She could call to you at the shop on that 467, it's not a regular simplex channel so she isn't subjected to you talking with "Bob"(we'll get back to him). Of course you picked a channel that isn't used by any repeaters to avoid interferance and at 15 watts it reaches the house fine, no need to blast all the way to the repeater input in the next town. While in the shop you could have a second channel set on the radio you set up there for something else... talking to your neighbor "Bob". Bob has been out fishing and calls you on simplex at the shop to see if you want some and tells you a bunch of terrible jokes you think are funny on his way over. Bob shows up and you say "where's the fish?". Bob says "oh, I didn't catch any". Typical... he just wants to come drink your beer while you tinker on your classic car. Your radio at the shop is a Fixed station when talking to the wife at the house and it's a Base Station when talking to Bob. Your wife thanks you because she dosn't have to hear Bob's terrible jokes on the radio (let's face it she's not a fan) but she can reach you when she wants. Bob thanks you because, well because he drank your beer. And you thank you because when your wife calls you can say "I gotta go Bob" and you don't get stuck at the shop all night. This has been a GMRS dramatization. The story you read may or may not be true. Bob's name hasn't been changed on account of he's not innocent
  11. Those are not violations though.
  12. Aside from the rules being what they are you would need to be running duplex on both the mobile and base or they wouldn’t hear each other in this scenario. I don’t see what would be gained by doing this. Just use simplex with a base. A repeater also repeats the mobile signal on the same 462 RX as you would be when using the mic on repeater. It isn’t a one way communication for anyone listening on 462. All communication is heard on the same 462 frequency as it is when going through a repeater.
  13. I agree, for listening. SWR is way bad for transmitting on 2 meter.
