Let me introduce myself - not because I go around introducing myself (that's pretty narcissistic isn't it?), but because it is the rule of the forum and I forgot to do it. SO hello there! Been a radio dork since about 1978 (Shortwave, CB, Ham, and most recently GMRS). Besides radios, I also own a Jeep JK, and like to visit my local gun range on occasion to blow the pocket lint out of the chamber so to speak. Oh, I am also a notarubicon subscriber (an honor to be reprimanded by the queen himself!) That's all for now! Quote

FishinGary Posted March 8 Report Posted March 8 Guess I completely missed the welcome thread, too. Been around for a bit. Mostly lurking. Welcome everyone and hello. Been into monitoring and radio in general for what seems like forever. Scanning, shortwave, etc. GMRS late last year and amateur radio earlier this year. Was in broadcasting for awhile, too (mostly the 90s). SteveShannon and WRUU653 2 Quote
jjlava Posted March 11 Report Posted March 11 Hi, I'm Jackie. I've been a radio fan for years and have listened to scanners, shortwave and utility radio. I've also been an amateur radio operator for over 20 years but off the air for a good portion of that time due to antenna and space restrictions. I just got my GMRS license a couple of months ago; I thought it would be a good idea to add one more communication method to my collection. I can't have an outdoor antenna of any kind where I live so I'm using some handheld radios at the moment. WRUU653 1 Quote

WSGN731 Posted March 12 Report Posted March 12 Hi, new here, I recently bought a handheld radio for the Jeep. Now thinking of getting a mobile for it. Found myGMRS on a YouTube vid. Quote
BoxCar Posted March 12 Report Posted March 12 @WSGN731Welcome to the zoo! Before you ask, the best radio to install in your Jeep is the one that fits your requirements best. That, and there are as many recommendations for antennas as there are antennas, WSGN731 1 Quote

Found myGMRS on a YouTube vid. Welcome! I like the db20g mobile from Radioddity. Small, simple, lightweight, only 20 watts but it has a button marked “FUN”. And it’s often on sale for less than $90. I bought two of them. If I wanted a full 50 watts I’d look at the Wouxun kg1000g. It’s not inexpensive but only a couple people have ever complained about it. Quote

The signal strength certainly improves with increased power, but terrain is usually the limiting factor at UHF, regardless of power. More power doesn’t make the signal follow the curvature of the earth and UHF stinks at skipping off the ionosphere. Once in a while the troposphere lends a hand though. I have a friend that lives at a cabin @ 5,500' near Tonopah. When i camp at Crawley lake we talk simplex quite a lot. It's probably a 120 mile line of site link. When i go low power on my Hytera, about 10 watts, he looses me. He is on a Kenwood and the same happens, i loose him for the most part on low power. The Hytera does pull a little bit. Also tried using HT's and no way. I'm using a Copper J-Pole on my end, he has a Larsen Dipole on his. Power does work in odd ways in UHF but i know in this situation it defiantly helps. No, we don’t say you’re lying about that; we tell you you’re a jerk when you imply that anyone who doesn’t get 200 miles is incompetent and when you scold new members about not reading the rules. EternalNoob Posted April 9 Report Posted April 9 Rolling in from the N. Idaho/NW Montana area to say hello! Brand-new to GMRS and radios in general. Have yet to program in my first repeater, and have had to watch several YouTube videos to figure out how to turn the power-on knob on my new HTs. Looking to learn, but I'll be comfortable with my forum handle for a while! FishinGary, WRUU653 and SteveShannon 3 Quote

WRUU653 Posted April 9 Report Posted April 9 Welcome @EternalNoob, may you outgrow your forum handle and enjoy. Great hunting in Montana? Hiking? Horse back riding? Camping? Off roading……? Repeaters are the extra but gmrs is for comms while doing something fun out doors Hiking, tromping around... hunting to the extent it's legal to use radios. Been out of the saddle for a long time, unfortunately, and I wouldn't trust my truck to manage a puddle these days, lol. WSHI503 Posted April 13 Report Posted April 13 Hello..I'm new to gmrs . I've been a listener to scanners for 30 years so I've heard National Guard chopper, U of I air care, Police, Fire, Ambulance, etc. as well as HAm, CB and gmrs on my Whistler 1040 scanners connected to a Diamond antenna at 54' on a fiberglass telescoping mast for the past 30+ years. I bought a pair of Btech 50v2 radios and I monitor Ch 19 mostly. I've heard traffic on Ch 1 young kids, CH16-17-18-19 adult conversation. Just got my Surecom SW-102 SWR meter today and tested all channels - both radios, home base and truck 1.0 - 1.4, so now I'm ready for some gmrs conversation WSHI503 Waverly, Iowa 73s Doc out.
