Wouxun Mobile Magnet Mic Hanger defect description and fix

Question

Posted

I bought the Wouxun Mobile Magnet Mic Hanger for my KG-XS20G+ radios thinking it was a good alternative to the included mic hangers.

The problem, after installing the Magnet Mic Hanger, its magnet seemed too weak to hold mic securely to a metal surface.

In fact, going back to look at the product reviews I found this was the common complaint!

However, the problem is not the magnet, but the supplied round head mounting screw.

The round head screw doesn't seat deep enough in the magnet's bevelled mounting hole.

This prevents the magnet from making full contact with a metal surface. (See first pic)

The fix is to either replace the mounting screw with the proper flat head version or bevel the under side of the supplied round head screw so it will seat properly.

I chose the latter because its a quick fix using a drill press and jeweler's flat file. (See second pic)

Lastly, the before and after vid.

Of coarse this had to be a woxoun issue.

this is how I solve this issue.   $3 and solves the problem and the mic will never come out no matter how rugged the ride is.   Same solution has been around for 50years   No need to make gimmicky stuff that has to be modified out of the box

Good info, but personally, I would have just replaced the screw.

What fun would that be.  Some of us look for stuff like that to "fix" for  the heck of it.  My wife was complaining that the new larger paper towel rolls wouldn't fit her holder.  I said buy a new one, she like the existing one.  So out to the garage, a full roll of the triples a tape measure and the appropriate sized drill bits.  Less than five minutes.  She's happy and I got to use tools.

No doubt, the HLN9073 is the more elegant of the two designs.  JJHXSM-like mic holders came with my Wouxuns mobiles. They are a little bendy, but useable.  However, to use one in my particular car, it would require me to screw it to the dash or center console and suffer an awkward reach or create interference with other stuff. None of which are acceptable to me. The magnet solution, while imperfect, allows me to secure the mic to the radio's mounting bracket without effort or precision.

Thanks for the information!

Good work!

I'm old enough to remember when making fire was enough to impress the spouse.
