How would anyone know the difference anyway?

Handheld plugged into a base antenna, it's still a handheld.

A mobile rig hooked to a power supply and base antenna is still a mobile rig.

We began doing this in our neighborhood. FRS radios were handed out to the more active folks with an agreement to use channel 15, so both FRS and GMRS users can participate.

I'm not sure I understand why GMRS users wouldn't be able to participate using the other 21 shared FRS / GMRS channels

Many mobile/base units with 20W+ will not TX at the low 0.5W max of 8-14. My DB25-G won't go below 5W, for example; won't even key up on 8-14. Channels 15+ let everyone play with whatever power they have available.

If mobiles are in the mix, I get blanking out 8-14, obv. But we're back to the rest of them lol

But alright. Feels like I'd want to stay off of the repeater channels that are likely to be pretty busy in the event of A Situation for local comms. But maybe you're in an area without much repeater traffic.

Ah, I see your point. Yeah, we're semi-rural central Florida and the only repeater that can reach here is 700, so simplex on 550 should be clean.
