While this is true. most of your average home computer users do not use the command line interface. It boils down to the KISS principle. For the average home user all they have to do is click on the install button and Windows does the rest for them. Most home users do not even want to mess with the CLI let alone know how to even use it.Each OS has its place. And for the com

And 99% of modern Linux Distros do the same. I only use the terminal because it's faster for me than using the GUI software center updater.

It's odd to me how this thread has devolved into a PI$$ING contest between Windows vs Linux when my entire intent was to simply help someone who runs Linux who my need a bit help getting their CPS to run under WINE. 😵‍💫

There's only been a couple radios I've had to send back because of the way the CPS handled connections. It's not a Linux problem, it's a CPS design problem.

Yet the CPS software works just fine in Windows, strange how that works.

Actually the issue is NOT what OS you are running in a virtual machine or which host OS you are using. The issue lies with the different virtual machine software and how they pass ports through from the host OS to the virtual machines.

And using emulators such as Wine has their own set of issues that has to be dealt with. Hence the reason why this thread was started.

For the average home user, it will always be way easier to run their chosen software on the OS it was written/developed for. The average user is not willing to deal with the issues when tying to run programs in emulators or in a virtual machine.

As long as the developers did their job then software will always run fine in the native OS the software was developed for. You can't say the same when emulators or virtual machines are used.

Ditto, I'm sure there's plenty of software packages that run just fine under Linux that wouldn't run at all in Windows and as far as I know there's no WINE equivalent for Windows to run Linux only software.  There's also plenty of Windows programs that have issues when running on Windows. The dreaded "Blue Screen of Death" is never an issue with Linux.

Hey TNFrank, I think it is great that you are sharing what you have learned with radios/computers. Reading over this whole thread it appears to me that you are the person PI$$ING the highest. I am one of the "lazy or ignorant" of which you spoke. In high school back in the first half of the 70's I took a couple semesters of typing. I needed an elective and the typing class was 28 girls and two boys. While I never got a date with any of those girls, I did learn to type. In the military people were amazed that I could type. The propulsion plants I ran were not run from computers yet. After the military I ran power plants for 30+ years. The last 2/3 of my career all plants involved computerized control systems. From the 90's on we even had station computers not connected to control systems for reports and email. I used those computers but never had anything to do with them other than being an end user. So some of us in radioland are not computer people and are happy to be "lazy or ignorant" end users. I have an old laptop that runs Windows 7 for running CPS for all of my radios that I use. Having said that, I can program all of my radios from the keypad. I guess I am just saying that not all of us are into computers to the degree you seem to be and that is ok.

I am glad there are people like you who can work on and solve problems with computers and are willing to help others.

Autism isn't always a negative.  Where Computers, Radios, knives and firearms are concerned it's a Superpower. They're some of my Special Interests that I tend to bore "normal" folks to death with talking about.

You don't have to remain "ignorant" of the power Linux can offer. You can download one of many Distros at Distrowatch.com and install the bootable ISO on a USB stick using Rufus in Windows, boot to it and have a look around. There's so many Distros to choose from(which may be a negative because it's easy to get overwhelmed) so if you don't like one give another a try.

Once you find one you like dig an old computer out of storage or buy one on EBay or Amazon, install it and have fun with it.😉

It's called WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux). And yes you can run Linux native software on Windows using WSL

Linux can and will crash too. And MacOS isn't perfect either and it's based on Unix just like Linux is.  And to be honest. I haven't had a BSD since Windows 8.1. But then again I am not running pirated software or other questionable programs, like illegal file sharing programs, on a Windows 10 or 11 machine either.

It's obvious that we are never going to change your mind about how Linux rules and everything else is garbage so this will be my last reply to this thread.
