WRZK526 Posted January 25 Posted January 25 Big storm hitting the East anyone stuck at home but able to talk on their radios? Would be good to hear some stories. Quote
Northcutt114 Posted January 25 Posted January 25 I keep hearing on the news that we all gone die. But so far, it's cold and dry here in the great state of Georgia. Elmo777 and RoadApple 2 Quote
TNFrank Posted January 25 Posted January 25 Nice if not a bit cloudy day here in AZ. Had mid to high 60's all day. Up North near Flagstaff is catching it bug the Valley is fine other than a bit of rain in spots. Elmo777 and RoadApple 2 Quote
Lscott Posted January 25 Posted January 25 Weather app forecast for the Detroit area is 6-7 inches of snow starting around 4-5 AM Sunday morning. Quote

I would hate to have to drive on I-40 in the Williams to Flagstaff areas and then east bound. Going to be a lot of ice and lots of accidents. RoadApple and TNFrank 2 Quote

LeoG Posted January 25 Posted January 25 When it comes Sunday early afternoon we are expected to get 10-15" of snow. I'm sure the radio will be working if the power doesn't go out. I have batteries at the shop, an inverter in the truck and a generator in the shop that I just started up today to make sure it works. 5 gallons of gas in the can and a full tank in the truck. I don't think this will be a big deal for us. It's a lot of snow, but nothing outrageous. Nothing like some of these states that are going to expect up to an inch of freezing rain. Back in the day we had almost 2" of freezing rain and it killed the power for close to 2 weeks. Got HTs and my mobile in the truck. RoadApple and gortex2 2 Quote

On it right now talking to a couple of regulars here in Maryland. Using the world famous and much loved made in Japan Vertex VX-4207. Later I will be testing my Chinese radios in the snow as I heard they don't work to well in that environment. Quote
Bogieboy01 Posted January 25 Posted January 25 Over here in eastern tn we just had donut glaze fall overnight... and its already melting off.... Quote
SteveShannon Posted January 25 Posted January 25 Meanwhile, here in the mountains of southwestern Montana it’s 13° and almost no snow on the ground. Quote
beerftw Posted January 25 Posted January 25 I am in central texas no radio chatter at all where I am at, no gmrs even cb channel 19 is dead and usually I get the freebanders flooding that channel. I can not even see the road anymore from snow pack, unsure how much the snow is messing with gmrs reception, but cell service and power is still active so likely no one feels the need yet to jump to gmrs for chatter. Have you called out on GMRS or the CB? Do you have back up power for your radio's and can you get on a repeater? How about trying at the top of the hour every hour and say you will monitor plus or minus 3 minutes every hour (to save batteries). May be some out there waiting for someone to start conversation. LeoG Posted January 26 Posted January 26 One of the repeaters around here is designated an emcomm and it was more active than usual. Just had a hour long chat on the Holyoke repeater, just the two of us. Figured someone else might join in. Quote

I have called out on both, the gmrs is already terrible reception in my area due to the trailer park and snow likely further degraded it, it was silent today. On cb I heard almost nothing. In my area cb is usually only populated with truckers who are mostly waiting out the frozen iced over highways today, or freebanders juicing their cb radios to oblivion which were also silent today. It is bad enough some days I can hear nothing from local texas traffic on cb but channels flooded with chatter from people in new york new jersey and california, and not from skip either, rather just blatently illegal systems the fcc does nothing about. LeoG Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Up in the NE where it was mostly a snow event. Light fluffy snow, so it doesn't really stick to anything like some of the wetter snows would. Easy to move around but also blown around if the wind picks up. All but the flimsiest antenna setups should be fine. No problems getting into my normal repeaters or my own. Quote

Do people really use 11m CB? Since GMRS is now the new CB, why bother with that noise box? Quote
Lscott Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Snow is all done in the Detroit area. In my neighborhood I got maybe 4 inches or so. It was under the predicted 5 to 6 inches. Was outside at 7:30PM with the snow blower for about an hour. Quote
WRUE951 Posted January 26 Posted January 26 its a crispy 29 degrees this morning here in the upper desert, My mancave is a toasty 79 degrees.. This waste oil stove puts out amazing heat.. Quote

As much as people disparage 11M it does have propagation characteristics that are better than VHF/UHF for long distance communications and in terrain that blocks higher frequencies. tcp2525 and beerftw 2 Quote
PACNWComms Posted January 26 Posted January 26 My crew in Heath, OH is hunkered down with 14" of snow. People are working from home remote if possible, and only first responders allowed out on roads. Radio is working great in VHF, UHF, and 7/800 MHz bands. Radio-over-Internet-Protocols links were checked as well. Everything working right now, and that is my only site "snowed in"......Ridley Park, PA and a few others are used to it and in the office though. Northcutt114 1 Quote

Drives me nuts, this isn't unusual snow for Ohio (northern), we get this every few years. Stop for the day, enjoy the fire in the fireplace, watch TV, clear the drive when it's over then go to work. Many people stayed home today though. D4 was quite variable, but that's cause the Cities are responsible for the highway, D3 was clear and dry, ODOT was on it. Radios still work just fine, I did have to clear the snow from the roof the car, the UHF whip disappeared, and the VHF whip was mostly hidden. Still checked into the morning net and listened to the plow crews getting back at it. Quote
LeoG Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Got 12-16" up here in northern CT. The official report from Bradley International said 12", we got more than that easily and I'm only 2 miles from the airport. Took me about 3 hours to clear my driveway, sidewalk, my neighbor I gave him a hand and did his front walk along with doing the sidewalk up the hill so my wife can walk the pooch safely. I do half the neighborhood it seems. Radio has been somewhat quiet, still a few voices being heard. Lots on the police frequencies and emergency and public works last night. Not so much today since the snow stopped and the plows caught up. Northcutt114 1 Quote
