Programming repeater Tx and Rcv channels

Hi folks,

New to GMRS and trying to learn as much as I can. I have a Wouxun KG805G and I've gotten permission to use a local repeater. He has given me the tone and indicated what freq / channel he's set to. Transmit on RP18 with designated tone and the receive is Channel 18 462.625 with designated tone. 

My question is this. Do I need to program both the transmit and receive channels with the corresponding tones? Meaning go to RP18, load the appropriate tone and save. Then go to regular simplex channel 18 and load the appropriate tone and save?

You don't need to mess with simplex channel 18 to use the repeater, just RP18. You CAN do it in the software if you want to, but if all the channels are as shipped, you can do it in the menu.  you just need to tune to RP18, go in the menu and look for "t-ctcs" or "t-dcs", menu to select, set it to the correct tone (provided by the repeater owner), and hit menu again to confirm.

For receive tones, think of it as a filter on what you hear. No receive tone set is the equivalent of no filter.

ARE YOU PROGRAMING IT USING YOUR PC?  IF S0 CREATE A NEW ENTRY WITH THE RX FREQ 462.625 AND TX FREQ 467.625 AND PUT IN THE TONES OR EACH AND THEN GIVE  THAT CHANNEL ENTRY A NAME. RITE IT TO YOUR RADIO AND SAVE THE FILE WITH THE DATE/TIME SAVED!

You shouldn't need to program a receive code for your radio, unless you are trying to filter out other radio traffic.

You will need to program the transmit tone on your radio, otherwise, you won't be able to open the squelch on the repeater, and your signal won't be retransmitted by the repeater.

Hi Tom, no pc. Just using the radio itself and manually loading the tones in.

Ah I see. Ok, that's what I needed to confirm. I correctly loaded the ctcs tone in RP18 I just wasn't sure if I needed to do something to the receive channel. It sounds like loading info onto the repeater transmission freq. is sufficient. Thanks to all of you!

Glad to help.

And to clarify a little, the repeater channels (RPxx) receive on 462.xxx the same as the simplex channels, they just transmit with the +5mhz offset (467.xxx) where the repeaters are listening, instead of on the same  channel they're listening (462.xxx)

THAT WILL WORK UNTIL YOU MOVE AROUND ANDENCOUNTER MULTIPLE REPEATERS ON THE SAME FREQ.  THEN IT IS EASIER TO SET UP NEW ENTRIES.

No disagreement there...I have a couple in my area like that, and it's a nice feature to be able to add those to extra memory slots on the wouxun. No such luck with the btech.

That said, getting a tone set and getting rolling is a good starting point....can always come back on the PC in the future and add more channels.
