According to the BuyTwoWayRadios website the KG-UV8H is a 2m/70cm HAM radio. I only see the TX frequencies listed and they are definitely 2m and 70cm. One of the pictures of the radio shows the dual display with GMRS 16 on it along with what looks a vanity HAM call sign on the other half. With 999 memory channels I'm guessing it can RX outside of the Amateur bands but TX only 2m/70cm. That is just a guess though. Email them, they have always been pretty quick to answer.

I am not aware of any way to get a Wouxun to transmit on Ham bands and GMRS; maybe this one does?!

for $30 you can experiment with the TYT-UV88 which is a dual band Ham Radio clone of the Radioddity GM-30, which easily opens to transmit on GMRS (and MURS).

these outperform the Baofeng UV-5Rs

after you get some experience, you can upgrade to a better radio of your choice

Sean: Both Callsigns are for the same Licensee in South Carolina!

Maybe he knows if it will also transmit on GMRS! ?

Looking at the Wouxun KG-UV8h. Can't tell if this is GMRS. Does it only receive GMRS but can't transmit on the GMRS frequencies? Would appreciate any input on this. Also is there a better choice for a  radio ? Thanks in advance for any help.

No, the KG-UV8H will not transmit on GMRS. It will receive GMRS only.
The KG-935G is the GMRS equivalent of the 8H. It will transmit on all GMRS frequencies, and receive-only everything else that the KG-UV8H will.

The menu system of the 935 is a substantial improvement over the 8H which is very, very clunky.
