Baofeng UV-9G problem with offset

Hello all, has anyone had this issue or know how to fix this or know what I'm missing? On my UV-9G if I go to the Offset menu selection on any channel it shows 000.000 and if I change it to say 005.000 save and exit the menu if I go back it will be 000.000 again. Also despite the menu saying 000.000 any channel aside from 1-22 has a +5.000 offset that I can't change and the display shows the +- icon. Any help appreciated.

Understood, thanks for the replies. Here's one more thing I had trouble with, on one of the "DIY" channels i.e. DIY2 or something I tried to program a simple simplex channel, 462.5625 (gmrs channel 1) with ctcss codes, is this even possible? Reason I ask is after I got it set up, I tried to transmit and the radio would not key up, push the PTT button and nothing, the button was dead. I even returned the frequency and other parameters to what they originally were on DIY2 and the radio still wouldn't key up. Seems like trying to change parameters on the DIY channel resulted in a dead channel. I was trying to do this to use to use with my son's walkie talkie so I can leave the GMRS1 channel free of ctcss codes.

Hello, It sounds like you are likely not on the same frequency and or with an offset that is pre set.  The DIY channels are all set up for repeater frequencies (channels 15-22 on your radio) the offset is already set as well. How are you setting up your programs? Are you doing this on the radio or in Chirp?  I find it easiest to do these changes in chirp. You can change these programs to match what you want for your your sons 462.5625 in chirp. I hope this helps.

WRUU you are right, the frequency (462.5625) I was trying to input was different than the factory-programmed frequency for the DIY channel I selected. In the case of trying to set up this particular channel I tried doing the programming on the radio by putting it into frequency mode, inputting the frequency, ctcss, etc.. deleting channel 31 or whatever I selected using the DEL-CH menu option (Menu no. 28) and then storing it using MEM-CH (Menu no. 27). I also have and have used the Baofeng UV-9G programming software. Anyways, when I returned to Channel mode the parameters I just set for channel 31 were there but the radio would not key up (it would tx before on the frequency it was set to from the factory). This seems like a quirky/unclear thing with this radio, the manual is not very clear about the intention of channels 31-116, are they intended to be somewhat customizable repeater channels or are they intended to be "scanner channels" where tx is not allowed. Or both?

What is not clear about... (page 5 of the manual)

Quote

•22 Modifiable GMRS Two-Way Channels (RX &TX)
• 8 Modifiable GMRS Repeater Channels (RX & TX)
•87 Programmable Scanner Channels (Receive Only)
•11 NOAA Weather Radio Scan Channels 117-127)

22 simplex channels, 8 repeater channels.

87 receive only SCANNING channels

Page 18-19:

Channels 1-30 are GMRS communication channels, which are allowed to be transmitted. However, these frequencies are fixed and cannot be modified.
Channels 117-127 are NOAA channels, and the frequency is fixed and cannot be modified. It is allowed to scan and receive.
Channel 55-116 is a user defined scan receiving channel. Only the receiving frequency is allowed to be set, and the transmitting frequency is forbidden.

I suspect that "55" is a typo in the manual, and should be "31".

ADDENDUM: Channels 1-30 are fixed frequency in order to keep them in line with the FCC consolidated FRS/GMRS channel numbering scheme. Modification is likely limited to bandwidth, CTCSS/DCS tones

What does "scan receiving channel" mean? And "Only the receiving frequency is allowed to be set, and the transmitting frequency is forbidden."? That's the unclear part (to me). Does that mean these channels are receiving only and will not allow transmitting? Because I can transmit on these channels.. until I tried to change the frequency on one of them then I was not able to transmit anymore on that channel. That's the quirky part. Unless I'm just missing something haha.

If you can't TX anymore I would check the frequency or you are not in the location of TX able programs 0-54. Check pages 25 and 26 for info on tones. I don't use them because as you may know it only keeps you from hearing others not from them hearing you. I do recognize you might have reasons to use them though.

They are allowing TX up to 54 because of the predetermined DIY repeater channels, after that no TX only scanning.

WRUU, interesting I'll try doing just that using the software this evening and see what happens. Maybe it's an issue with trying to program on the radio.

Remember to take the offset out if you are in the DIY channels and putting in frequencies for simplex not repeater. Good luck.
