Midland MTX400 not receiving sound from repeater

I have a Midland MTX400. I am connected to the repeater , but the radio has no sound on receiving a signal. Signal meter works. I believe that I can transmit to the repeater because I 

use another radio to listen to. The owners manual is very vague at best. I programmed the radio from the front panel. Any ideas?

My guess is that you have the wrong tone for receiving set in the radio. Remove the RX tone and try again.

I did not put in a receive tone.

Double-check that there is no tone set, then try turning-down your squelch..

If you are still not hearing anything, then you're either doing it wrong (wrong frequency, not actually hitting the repeater, or any number of other things) or the radio is defective... and i doubt its defective.
