How to pull broken pin in SMA connector?

I've got a HT with a female SMA antenna connector and the center pin on the antenna broke in the connector somehow. The broken pin is buried deep enough that you can't really see it much less pull it out with tweezer's. I tried a kind of strong refrigerator magnet but that didn't work. Anybody know of a way to pull the pin without having to disassemble the radio?

It might be rough on the radio but the only way I can think of would be inertia. Tap the antenna jack with a plastic mallet and check often to see if it’s working its way out. Once it’s poking out slightly maybe you can pull it out.

The question that needs to be answered is not "if" but "when" the radio case is going to be removed to retrieve the broken pin. Your concern should be if the pin works its way down inside the radio and short circuits something and causes a castistrophic and costly repair. Bite the antenna and retrieve the pin now.

Looking at a drawing of one type of female SMA, which has a solder cup on the other end of the center pin socket, it appears that the pin cannot go into the radio. If it could then opening the radio and pushing the pin through would be the way to go.

@markskjerve, your idea is the same as mine. I think Neodymium Magnets would work if the pin isn’t stainless. Or @Sshannon’s idea. If you get it out please let us know what worked. Good luck.

A data sheet for a high quality SMA male connector shows that the center pin may be beryllium copper, which is not attracted to a magnet.
