Baofeng GM-5RH Manual

I bought the 2-pack of the GM 5RH and they were delivered in about 3 days, went back to buy another 2-pack, they are no longer available, even as a single radio ... wish I'd bought another 2-pack at the same time I bought the first pair ... My wife loves the look and feel and I agree, pretty good units and easy to change settings from the unit itself.

If I'm remembering correctly, this happened before when they put stuff on a close-out sale.  Don't recall what radio it was, but I never got it.  I think Prime customers have theirs pulled first.

Hopefully they are just out of available stock and there are more in the works to be delivered ... even at a higher price, so far, mine are good units ... and I hope that using external antennas my vehicle & house will make them even better ... also have the UV 9G (pair) for back-up & bad weather ...

I thought for sure I was getting hosed as this morning it still had not shipped and I am not a Prime member. 

But I just got notified that it shipped and will arrive tomorrow!

My GM5RH finally shipped too.  Coming tomorrow (so they say), but I can't tell who's the carrier yet.  First update in a week, not a good experience.  But whose fault is it, Amazon or Abbree?

I will bet dollars to donuts your delivery is from Amazon, like it seems mine will be.

Have you tried using the USB-C charging cable for programming?  I'd be surprised if programming worked through the battery port.  There was no K-1 programming cable included with mine and no USB-C port on the radio.  I haven't tried programming in extra channels yet.  The manual says it can receive 220MHz but I'd need more 220 antennas because neither these nor my 5RH-Pro-GPS ones came with those (K5+ did but it actually TXs although low power).

 

What do you think of the sound?  Sounds like a cardboard box to me.  It's understandable, just sounds cheap.  Baofeng needs to spend a few pennies and put good speakers in these otherwise solid radios.

I haven't tried to program it yet with the cable and you are right: I though there would be a USB-C port next to the K-1, like the TIDRadio TH-H3, but NO! So I guess it will require my USB to K-1 FTDI cable that I use for my other Baofeng analogs. Supposed to work with Chirp, too.

I haven't really spoken to anyone on it yet.  I did get to chat with @72Red through it on the Spanish speaking 600 repeater, but we got chased away for speaking English! hahaha. He could hit the 650 Sylmar repeater but his audio was not making it through.

I am not sure if there is much activity on 220 around here; although I know Condor has some 220 machines.  Years ago I purchased the UV-5Rx3 to include 220 capability, but in practice I have not used it much.  So the 220 antenna from that one would be optimal; but again, as shipped, our GM-5RH's will not transmit on 220.

I started to do research on unlocking these units, but at the end of the day, Amazon has a 2 pack of the Ham Radio version of these with GPS and programming cable for sale for $39 and it even includes a 3rd antenna, a stubby!

Update on programming: As I expected, my USB-A to K-1 FTDI programming cable works easily with Chirp when Chirp is set for GM-5RH.

I saved the "default" settings and then named the 700 repeater "Spanish 600" and wrote it back to the radio.

With Menu 25 set to Name instead of Freq, the display now reads Spanish 600 on Channel 25.

Regarding 220, being in the range 136-260 that was from the last page of Chapter 1, section 1.2 Main features.  But in Appendix C it says 136-173.99.  UPDATE: 136-260 seems to be correct as it allows entry and scanning (no signal now to test receive).

 

I did not find any mention in the manual of programming with software and cable.

I don't recall any of the Baofeng analog radio's manuals having programming instructions; especially since many rely on Chirp.

I agree, but I was checking because I think if it allowed programming by the included USB-C cable that would be mentioned.

I just ordered the $39 5RH Pro GPS unlocked two pack for next Monday

If that's the 5RH Pro GPS, it has a different menu display, white background, organized into categories (some pros and cons).  For GPS to work, you may need GNSS turned on (I did) and be in a wide open area.  It gets lat/long OK (8-9 satellites), off by ~100 ft on elevation.

Pushing the “*” button toggles through a Reverse and Simplex functions when on a Repeater channel. 

Holding down the “#” key starts and stops scanning

I ordered 2x two packs (four radios) on 9/15 and they arrived today.  Seems to be the same radios I ordered last time.  Only difference I found on first glance is that these are 1 to a box.  I’ll look more closely tomorrow, program them and check the power output to compare to the previous ones.

OK I'll play: Mine were 2 to a Baofeng branded blue-green box designed with dividers that support that (box was wrapped in green plastic). 

But, the numbers on the back of the radio and in Menu 45 mean more than the box.

I gave the menu choices for that part (were wrong now fixed).  For the back label, take the battery off.  There is another one too, hold down 8 while turning on.
