Have just recently picked up a new UV-5g plus, looking for others who have the same,  something doesn't seem right,  when I turn the radio on I see the frequencies and the back how after a few seconds the backlight disappears and the frequencies as well and are not seen again until one of the frequencies becomes active then after a few seconds they disappear again, is this a total LCD screen where it needs to be lit all the time in order to see the frequencies, I've found the "ABR" setting that allows to do so, thought the screen would be similar that of the smaller UV-5g where when the backlight goes out the frequencies are still visible, anyone have similar issue

This is 100% by design, and as it should be, and it is not intended to be the same as the 5G, which uses a totally different kind of screen.  The user manual unlocks the mysteries of how to set the different screen settings, it is highly suggested reading.

My UV-21 does that too.  I just got used to pressing the return/exit key and the display lights up again.  I think this feature saves some battery life.

I have gone into the "ABR" setting under menu and found that there was a setting for on I found that it used up a lot of power, right now I have it set to 20 seconds and then the screen shuts down, I'm a faithful follower of yours, offroaderx, and I purchased it after the video I saw between it and the TD radio that was being compared, the only thing I can say that I don't really care for is the screen issue,  like the weight and size, power is good too.
